Hi All
As you may know I need to rewire my 914/4.
I've been think that whilst I doing it I may as well update it. I am thinking of running LED's all round (headlights, spotlights, fig lights, rear lights, gauges) basically the works, to try and keep the stress off the alternator and give me some proper lighting. I am also thinking of putting a USB socket in somewhere for charging phones etc.
I want to keep the look as original as possible but as its not a matching numbers car and running on 16's its not original but I intend to keep it for a long time and want it future proof to a degree. I've decided I'm going to do things once now and get it right the first time.
Has anyone upgraded to LED's and have any idea of what funky stuff I need in the harness to make it work? I assume its possible....!
Thanks
Ben

Re: Wiring ideas
I don't know much about electrics but I upgraded to LED headlights with no problem...The kit came with a plug in resistor to use if there was any flickering, but I didn't need it.
Thats all I know, but the "full works" should be fairly straight forward I would think.
I think there was some discussion of LED lights being an MOT fail on older cars? Might both worth looking into before getting in too deep.

Replacing the whole lamp with an E marked LED unit is fine.
Replacing filament bulbs with LED bulbs is illegal in Europe.

Re: Wiring ideas
Your post reminded me of a guy on 914world who designed and produces led lights for 914's. Not sure if they would be classed as legal here in the UK though.

Re: Wiring ideas
Do you do much nighttime driving? LEDs are great as headlights, but I've found them to be pretty horrible for instrumentation unless it was designed for them in the first place. You'd be amazed at the difference a good cleaning of glass, contacts, and bulb replacement can make.
The USB port is easy enough, you can pick them up for peanuts and they only need 12V. If you're running cables for that (and I reckon the wee storage bin between the seats is the best place for that), then had you thought about running an aux cable from the same location into the back of your stereo?
