What did you do in/on/for your Porsche today?

Buy a 987 Boxster, they are not perfect, but when working are great.

You need one car surely that dependably works every time, is fundamentally 'boring' and requires near zero effort?
Try a Skoda Superb, very apt description. You won't realise you have arrived.

The Boxster is as said, but stupidly flawed by poor design.
The 911 is wonderful and might continue to appreciate, doubt it.

The 987.2 is the second generation of the 987 and has a new design of engine.

The IMS bearing is gone, and the 2.9 engine does not suffer fron bore score an has a simpler injection system compared to the larger S engines also fitted.

It is the engine that gives the nerves around the Boxsters and Caymans, so Generation 2's are easier.

The other modern Porsche issues remain, front discs that corrode no matter how hard you brake and exhaust bolts and nuts that literally corrode away and the exhaust can come loose and blow.
The latter is common to many Porsche's af the era, get to 8 or 9 years old and these issued will manifest themselves, and diy is hard without the right tools.

On the + side it is a great car.
Pleanty of speed in the 2.9, a screaming sound track when above 4000 and at the red line...sublime.

Goodcruising economy at about 32 mpg and I've seen 37 on a tour to Germany.
Lots of baggage room and excellent AC and heater, the AC system needs to be watched and ensure no leaves etc get jammed into the bottom of the front mounted rads.
I've just replaced mine for £350 diy and added £120 in front grills to stop the leaves getting in.

You can make a list like this for many car, the Porsche range is no different, just well documented.

Finally, if you are not a DIY guy find a good indie to help you!

Bought five unbent, unkerbed 14in Fuchs for a snip, along with a pair rare of early-model 914 rear hubs ripe for redrilling to five lug. Gotta love eBay (sometimes)...

I've been doing little electrical jobs. I fitted a fuel gauge damper which virtually eliminates the dancing of the fuel gauge needle as the float bobs around in the tank.

And a small piezo buzzer which tells me when I've left my lights on. Connect the black wire to the top of fuse number 1 and the red wire to the top of fuse number 8 and if the lights are left on when the ignition is turned off, the buzzer sounds.

My/Hayley's/our car was delivered to AFN on the 18th of March 1959. I should imagine the car was fresh off the production line around this time 60 years ago.

That weather got to us in the West Midlands!

987.2 Boxster, last errands done, now ready for Europe!
Big Euro trip building up in the Boxster, so it needs to be ship-shape for the Tour.


Just collected the car from Zuffenhaus in Birmingham having had the exhaust 'triangle' fasteners (that had all but disappeared) replaced with stainless proper nuts and bolts/gaskets, the two rear clamp rings (that had corroded and split) and the AOS I bought at OPC Wolverhampton fitted, though I don't think it was broken, but as I had it, Zuffenhaus fitted it for me.
If the car has cold start smoke now there is nothing I can do except buy an AUDI TT!

Dead easy to deal with, dropped the car off at 8.30am and picked it up at 2.30pm having 'survived' a shopping spree in Solihull/John Lewis with minimal damage.
The Zuffenhaus bill was not a fright either!

Great Independent imho, and not too far from me, just 1 hour in the rush hours.

Last week had 2 new rear tyres fitted, N1 approved on the 10" rims. Do they ever weigh a lot!

Last errand is the MoT in March and a discussion I'm sure about rusty disc brakes...
Then all is ready, looking forward to 4 or 5 countries.

I took my 14 year old daughter down to Oulton Park for a Young Driver Plus day. Sophie got to drive part of the main circuit and managed an impressive 60+mph down the pit straight which she really enjoyed. A fantastic day for her, and to top it off, we used the 911E. It hadn’t turned a wheel since September. Started on the second crank, 240 miles and it didn’t miss a beat. You can forget how good these cars are.

Out in the 993 this morning to drop it off at my mates for a few bits to be sorted. Was fitting a new oil pressure sender as mine had stopped working but it’s sorted itself on the run to the garage! New heater flap and piping to go on after I ripped the some of the old stuff off when I reversed the car into the garage for the first time. I drive in now!

Not quite in my Car, but met MikeyC today at Race Retro. Impressed to hear what he said about early 911's and how he described things, looks like I've met the next Bob Watson.

Not too far to get to him and small enough to care and be hands-on.
Like that in a Specialist.
