64 911 at Sotheby’s

Rm Sotheby’s have some interesting cars listed for their upcoming Paris auction, 6th feb including this 64 911, also a 550 listed in the line up.

64 cars are held in high regard by some (take a look at the estimate). I am not an expert on these early models but this car has taken a bit of a beating by those that do over on the ESR. The only thing that saved it from being banished into total exile, it seems, is the colour. Apparently too many big ticket items are wrong, virtually unobtanium and stratospheric in price to justify the auction estimate.

Pretty looking car though.

Out of interest do you know what the missing big ticket items are mike?

Auction estimates don’t mean a lot to be fair, in my experience they are about as accurate as the weather forecast. Yesterday’s weather forecast for today said sun all day for our neck of the woods, in reality its been grey all day with some seriously gusty winds! Ah well, try again tomorrow, sooner or later they’ll get it right.

I'm not sure any of them are really "big ticket", in the context of a 600-800K Euro car...

Stuff I noticed at first glance:

• Grille should be the "tall" type
• Seats should have 6 pleats not 5
• Turn signal lenses are repro
• Ignition switch bezel is wrong (like very wrong, not a later type, just wrong)
• Nasty current version repro Porsche badge - it's not very hard to find an original
• If you're going to include a tool roll, use the right one...

But there's probably a load of unobtanium stuff our friends in the US have spotted.

I suppose the problem with my list of relatively minor issues is that they demonstrate that the restorer was not really expert. Which clearly matters for that kind of money.
Also is a restored / arguably over-restored car worth less than a survivor? I'm guessing the answer is a definite "yes" in this sector of the market.

With that said, if I had the sort of money the buyer will have, I probably would. Find another! Especially in that amazing colour.

I will agree with all comments made. It is, when all said and done one of the first. I guess you could say that it has competitive history may add to its provenance. The rework has been an attempt to return it to user/collector status. You get what you paid for.

One of the other 'hard to get' pieces is the correct aircleaner - that one is off a post Feb '65 car.

Even with everything replaced correctly. it will never be in the 250-500,000 bracket now we know about it. Maybe the low price is fair.

Very pretty colour. Most unusual.

I’ll take exception to the statement that there are hundreds of differences between a 64 car and a 65 car. Not true. The early 65 cars share enormous amounts of same parts as the 64 cars, there are not that many differences. Yes the later 65 cars differ a lot but they differ a lot from the early 65 cars just the same.

One thing is for certain, my early 65 car has far more 64 parts than this one has!

Looks lovely though if you are not being picky. But at the price I guess you need to be...
