Differences in doors

Post by RichardBTek »

Hi

Can anyone tell me if there's a difference between early (pre 73 911T) doors and the latter doors fitted to the impact bumper cars. I was wondering if the new replacements from Porsche are made to fit all models or if there is an obvious difference which can't be modified to original spec? I understand that mirror fittings and fixing holes inside might vary slightly.
I'm looking for a S/H L side door and noted there are quite a few available from later cars out there. I was wandering if they might be a better value option.

My LH door is from a 964. I redid the mirror holes from the original door as reference and had to drill a few holes to mount the trim. There are little indents where all the early trim holes are so that’s easy enough.

The only issue is the front mount for the trim waistrail as the door inner is a different shape in that area. I made a little 90deg bracket to bridge the gap.

If I’d had my time again I’d have cut that bit of the door inner off and grafted it onto the new door. But the bracket does the job!

Sometime in January 1973 a reinforced crash bar was added to the door so if your question is about a 1971 T then it wouldn’t have had the bar.

A later door will fit the hole and is the same size and shape. There are however a lot of differences to the inner frame which you may or may not have to modify dependant on how original you want it to be.

If you take a look just over half way down this project diary you'll see some of the changes we made to use a later door on a '73E

Thanks everyone, good advice. Ihave the old door so grafting in the odd bracket wont be a problem and a crash bar makes sense to me too.
