Fuel Pipe

I need to replace the flexible fuel pipes in the engine bay, one has just failed. Is there any specific pipe to go for? I've seen the discussions about ethanol in fuel - will any woven exterior 'classic car' pipe be suitable or is there something specific I should be using?

Probably safest to buy actual modern fuel pipe from your local motor factor. Halfords might even have it.

I did this awhile ago. I couldn't find a classic looking braided line that I felt comfortable would stand up to modern fuels. From what I have read modern fuels are more volatile and will seep through lines more readily.

In the end I went for gates modern fuel line which does not have braiding. R9 i believe is the spec I have.

I went for safety over appearance.

I guess you could use the modern line under the car where it is not seen or easily accessible, then use a braided line in the engine bay and regularly/ frequently replace?

Thanks Matt. Having had fuel dribbling off the bottom of a fortunately cold engine I've gone for safety over looks and modern pipe it is. I think I'll try and find a non / low ethanol fuel as well (Tesco's standard unleaded may have had it's day for my 912).

I'd be interested to hear what you find out about low ethanol fuels.

Hard data seems hard to come by, many companies just state their fuel meets regulations.

I haven't found any that advertise the actual % ethanol.

Some folk say the super premiums are good but again I do like hard data.

Do not use the fabric braided stuff from GSF. We've seen it fail after 8 months under controlled conditions. We told one of their directors face to face and showed him the pipe. He said he would investigate. That was 3 years ago and we are still waiting. I'm reminded every time I see a burnt out VW on FB.

I changed all mine on my 356 last year, just used Halfords stuff....I removed engine recently and noticed the small piece behind the fan housing connecting the two steel pipes had deformed and semi collapsed. Not sure why,it may not be fuel related as all the rest are ok. But will change them all when i put engine back in...So has anyone got a recommendation on what to use?

Last time I checked (admittedly a few years ago!), the stuff Halfords stocked was not fit for my lawnmower.

Contrary to other people's experience, I use fabric-braided Cohline fuel hose on my cars & haven't had any problems.

However, I replace the hose annually & most of the time I seek out ethanol-free fuel (Esso Synergy Supreme+ Unleaded 97) ...

Several years back (probably 8 or 9) when the ethanol usage became an issue I replaced all my lines with Halfords stuff, a couple of years later the lines going to my carbs started leaking fuel, fortunately I always check the fuel lines for leaks whilst the engine is warming up. I replaced with new lines again from Halfords but this time I think I went for the type marked as R9, these have been absolutely great and have with stood use of modern fuels with no problems.

Gates make a product called Gates Barricade. I'm going to purchase enough to replace all the lines on my 911.
Any idea how much approx I will need?

Can anyone tell me what diameter I’ll need??? Seems there’s loads of different ones. I’m not being lazy it’s just my car isn’t with me at the moment
