Rear wheel bearing - manufacturer Reference

Hi All

I've come across the "bearing mystery" again - I had this with gearbox bearings previously and now when planning my alloy banana arm swap and trying to buy parts in anticipation. I'm looking for rear wheel bearings suitable for an impact bumper car (but not a turbo or wide body).

Short of taking out the existing bearing and reading what will presumably be a reference on the edge of the cage, one can't seem to obtain an SKF or FAG reference number easily? The mystery is that it seems reference numbers are rarely published (and we're kept in the dark.....) as Porsche & other parts retailers appear to be trying to avoid people avoiding Porsche tax, shopping around etc. All this is my own conspiracy theory I will admit .....

Basically I'd like to source locally ahead of work to avoid waiting for parts (ie if I have to get reference from the existing) and it will allow me to shop around and source what is probably a standard sized bearing (used in any number BMW/Saab/Benzes) at a sensible price....

Am I too suspicious (oh and anybody have the correct reference)?

I have searched and nothing specifically relevant to the rear bearings (of admittedly an impact bumper car, although mine is a pre-impact - so again, playing with a Frankenstein car is fraught with...... confusion for an amateur.....).

I guess the "ideal" was finding a database from SKF or FAG or equivalent in which you typed in the car and/or use of the bearing and it came back with specific product, which you could then cross-reference.

I don't suppose such a thing exists?

Careful trusting stock photos:

My google foo says “80x42x42” for >74 arms but verify that with someone who actually knows.

I was just trying to work out why I had two piccies of the FAG bearing - interestingly one made on Brazil and the other in Slovakia, but with totally different numbers!

I'll exercise caution, and if unsure but from a specialist. This "keep the mystery" thing to avoid customers shopping around irritates me...

The 'F' Designation used on the bearing shown usually means a 'protected' part that will be unavailable from normal bearing stockists.

The normal designation is to specify ID x OD x Width - hence 42 x 80 x 42.

You can find SKF Bearings BA2B309609DB but they are relatively expensive.

I've game for experimenting - the BMW bearing kit (Made by SKF) has been ordered. Total cost (here in South Africa) about 35 quid versus 200 from Porsche….

It's been worth asking the question!
