Bilstein insert in Bilstein strut - Roll Pin

Post by inaglasshouse »

Hi all,

Per the title, my 69 car has Bilstein struts with Bilstein inserts, meaning the insert is held in place vertically by a roll pin at the base of the strut.
I've taken it all apart today to cure a rather epic clonking noise, which turned out to be a failed roll pin. Insert was thus free to move in the strut, and was noisily enjoying that freedom.

Question is: does anyone know where to get a replacement roll pin, please? It's a funny size (7mm diameter - 6mm and 8mm are more readily available). Since it's a single point of failure I would ideally like to use something from Bilstein or a reputable supplier to Bilstein's spec, not an eBay pot luck special.

Many thanks in advance,
Richard.

I've replaced these kind of pins over the years, and used a lot in designs when I worked.
Find a real fastener supplier close to you and get them from him.

Take the broken pieces to him with the strut and insert all cleaned and follow their advice.
There are several types of pin design, and they can be described differently which can be miss-leading and hard to find on Google etc.

Your friendly local agricultural machinery dealer will usually have boxes full of them.
Make sure to replace it with the curved section in contact with the damper piston, not the split edge.
