Not Rolling - Rear Wheels locked

Post by Westy »

Been informed that my 77/78 911 has arrived at the shippers in the UK, however the rear wheels are locked, handbrake off, in neutral yet it wont budge, or any other gear.

Anyone any ideas what the cause could be?

I drove it in the US so believe something has happened in transport!!

Cheers,
Paul

Could be the handbrake shoes have expanded? Could take the rear wheels off and tap the outside of the drum part of the disc with a mallet/hammer to free them up. Same thing happens on my trailer brakes if I leave the handbrake on for any length of time.

Probably handbrake has been pulled on over-tight and the butterflies have locked over centre.
Can sometimes be cleared by removing the pads, and slackening and drawing the rear discs slightly with the M8 threads.

Thanks for the quick replies guys.

Transport company say the wheels/discs move a little, sounds more gearbox clunky!

It could be the callipers have seized on solid - ask me how I know - exact same situation.

Not the most likely explanation (agree with others, look at parking brakes first). But, pursuing this line...if the transmission is the thing stopping movement, it can't really be in neutral (even if the gearstick seems to be).
Quick test - what happens when you depress the clutch?
If gear selection (neutral selection in this case) is the problem, try checking the gear linkage - take off the panel at the rear of the transmission tunnel (inside the car), check that the gear linkage rod and selector shaft are both engaged with the joint. Up at the gearstick end, check that it is engaged with the selector rod.

If it was left in gear while being shipped, that can be a problem. Putting the lever in neutral won't help as gear can remain selected - had this happen with a VW race car of mine after trailering it to France. The only answer was to fire it up and release the clutch – it popped straight out of gear.
