Last stopover on CLM trip-Dieppe>Newhaven tomorrow- Jaffa goes to Greatworth Wednesday so Angus’s crew can sort out all the issues that jave come up over nearly 3000 miles over last two weeks and I fly back tp Cork- phew!

Took the old 73T to a local body repair shop with a view for an exterior re-paint.
Came recommended by several friends as they had done 2 x MG midgets, 1 x Healy 3000 metallic and 1 x 1964 Lotus 7.

Brilliant outcome.
At last a real simple paint shop with real blokes who understand things rather than the usual automatic " that will be £10K plus materials and 3 months + any surprises" touch I've had in the recent past. I think that last bit is Porsche tax because most think these cars are all worth a minimum of £250,000.

Self prep welcomed, so I will do the donkey work of glass out etc, some small sheet metal welds and chemically remove all the cellulose I put on in 1989. Being retaired, I have lots of free time!
They will prime with 3 coats of 2K primer and block out and paint the light yellow the car is now, paint to match the current 'fade'. Full polish out as a finisher.
Their paint supplier will measure the colour when I take a panel to them, also local.

4 weeks or so turn around and I do all the re-assembly. Looking forward to a new screen at last.
Good price so I can afford now to have a new deck lid and some other bits. This car has never has a lot of £££ spent on it, hill climb car in the past.

Winter project all set and ready to start end of Sept.
Have 2 new front wings, need a rear lid and a new 'glass S front bumper.

Thinking of removing all the bumper rubbers and paint the area with a subtle strip etc.
Budget is £3K max and I'm well inside this.

This will be a solid simple paint job for a bitza 911 and I won't have to be worried about chips and scrapes on the car until I'm dead and the car passes to my daughter.

Might even do a little thread on it to irritate some of you.

i tmight be a 'bitza' , but still a good looking car. I know I'd have been tempted with a colour change back to viper green though, although i imagine that would have ended up costing more ?

Not sure if it is Viper Green.
We have a 20 sq mm area of the green and it looks a bit metallic, but would look naff in my opinion.
Wife is a devout believer green cars are bad luck and all my green company cars from the past bear this out!

The colour ID plate on the 'M8' A post is rubbed-down to the bone, no numbers left from when it went Guards Red from the green in the 80's before my time with it.

The car is not worth much and as such I won't spend a silly number on the paint, in fact I really want to paint it myself again, but in this day and age and in the interests of keeping friends with those in the Cul-de-Sac it cannot be.

Car looks ok from that camera distance but wife said it is sad to see the car in it's present state of 'well-patina'd' and with this approach, it would be silly not to paint it!
Permissions are worth a fortune.

The day it arrived by trailer, daughter now 32 years old...
God, it was rough and cost £3K, but the 2.2 T engine was sweet and it had a very very dodgy MoT.
Looking forward to the task.

Good plan Graham, proper colour changes are so involved.

Obviously pre and post pics will look identical from 20 feet but it’s good to do anyway!

The value of the car is the key thing.
It may be worth 30K due to how it is, so a 10K paint job would add £?k value over the current 30K?

With an original matching number car (like yours) commanding 4/5 times that then a far richer re-paint is an investment, as would be a 100% colour change.

This car has never been more than a hobby car, hill climbed and now retired to high summer days, and @ 210 bhp/ton no slouch, but now the controversy of the wretched Substantially modified debacle is over I'm ready to improve things by this basic paint job.

One painter of classic cars wanted to seal and 2K paint over ALL the existing cellulose on the car for £6K + materials and any surprises.

Here, I can fix the small issues on the body myself that have inevitably arisen after I welded it all for 8 months in 1989 and then off to a normal paint job.
In 1989 the materials cost £60!

I'm looking forward to it now and laughing at the first of many stone chips.

I looked at the extensive pictures I took of the restoration (on 35mm film) and I'm amazed I did so much in such a short time and travel the planet working in the automotive industry that nearly killed me!
I don't know how you put up with it, but I worry for the world...

Had the GT out on the Silverstone circuit today, for day 1 of a two day "Performance" driving course with Porsche Experience Centre.

I did their one day "Precision" course earlier in the year in the RS and - blow me - today I got the same instructor as last time.
Some old bloke... quite handy at the wheel though, I can tell you.

Given a pass-out today, so went in the 911 to my local hill climb and a clubbie meeting.
Always good to bring the car to where I started and ran for 13 glorious '911' years.
Never missed a beat as ever, something must go wrong soon.

Went to Goodwood for the Breakfast Club meet via Porsche Brooklands. Great hospitality from the team at Brooklands and some amazing cars at Goodwood. It was good to catch up with some fellow DDK members.

When to classic car hub bibury for their coffee morning, first decent drive in the 911T since getting it back from Fennlane, brilliant, I can’t thank Chris enough for his and Vince’s work.
