Yesterday was the big moment after 5 years of building, countless hours of planning/ dreaming was all the effort going to meet the approval of the IVA inspector?

So early start car on trailer and off to Norwich IVA centre on Jupiter road. Arrived 15 minutes early not quite sure where to go. Fortunately people pointed in the right direction.

So Ian was our examiner for the day who made me feel at ease from the start with a cup of coffee and a chat, however he did politely point out that most people don't pass first time. The test started at 8 am with Serial numbers and VIN chassis plate checks to match the paperwork. Emission were next before moving onto the four post. After a thorough check underneath and lots of "Not seen one like this before, its cleaner here than on top" we moved back onto the flat for a full electrical and measurement check. We were introduced to Jason the mechanical driver who does the seat belt height and head rest checks.

So brake rollers next: fronts 197 left 197 right "we don't get that often" perfect balance. Then the back brakes and the dreaded hand brake. Fingers crossed on the hand brake which has been the plague of the whole build. Numbers looked good to me.

Next set of rollers were described as seeing if the car will do 70 mph. Straight into fourth pull away on the rollers straight up to 70 on the speedo gauge and electronically measured rollers at 65 mph so that's another tick

Ian took the speedster for a drive around the car-park checked the steering self centre and weighed the car. Now onto mirrors and sound emission. So with a standard 911 exhaust thought all was going to be well. The limit is 99db and I reached 99db at 3/4 revs so another tick - just

Ian left us at this stage to entered the weight into the computer to check the front/ rear balance and comparison against the design axle weights given. Fat boy at 1040kg

Ian came out with a big smile and congratulated me a first time pass!

Really struggling to believe I passed but I have the IAC certificate to prove it.

Well done hope mine goes as smoothly as yours when it's my time. Will no doubt be asking some questions when I get closer to this stage.
What's the plans now?
Also would like to see some pictures of it in its IVA livery especially mirrors etc.

Spent around 4 hours last night completing the 1st registration docs and the Build forms and gathering all the required ancillary docs required by DVLA. Large brown envelope with cheque sent off last night. Hopefully will receive confirmation of V5C, age related plate and tax in the post before the end of the month. Must say its extremely painful waiting for the red tape to be done before I can drive the speedster on the open road. Already planned the first few journeys.

So what next? Actually all the focus has been on IVA so not really sure what plans I have for the car. Obviously paint and finish interior, this was set day one, page one of this post. But its now down to the details, mirrors, fog lights, bumpers, badges, steering wheel, not happy with the rear light position, want to change wing profiles where they return underneath, re-fit screen, washers, wipers, hardtop, tonneau cover, too much to list really.

Certainly between Mdmax72 and I we can answer lots of questions and share experience. I think a how to IVA handbook is a great idea.

Trouble is most don't like the answers to the IVA question

I noticed on your IVA post you mentioned about getting the speedo calibrated and certificated beforehand, how and who did this for you?

Richard - difficult to explain. I used the Porsche 915 gearbox which has the speedo sensor, so when you put the back wheels on the IVA free rollers the drive wheels and sensor work on the same axle. So with a Beetle the drive is on the back axle and the mechanical sensor on the front.

With mine I used 915 gearbox and speedo gauge with correct diameter tyres from a standard 911 targa hence calibration is the same as original.

The IVA examiner said that if they cant measure the speed of the car and check the speedo reading than its up to the car owner to provide laboratory evidence or similar. I believe mdmax72 maybe able to give further guidance?

The problem is the power is at the rear wheels and the speedo connects to the front wheel. Making it difficult to get a reading without the right rollers.

There is a place in Donington that can test your car for speedo calibration and issue a certificate for the IVA. They have rollers that can self propel. Not sure what they charge. Will try and find out the contact details.

they do it remotely with a few careful measurements and will provide a certificate...good for £80 and they will make you a cable too if a standard one is no good like mine.

The only thing to remember is the tyre diameter will have a significant impact on the speedo reading. So if you are using low profiles on a 15" wheel the speedo will not read correctly. You will need to keep the diameter to within less than 1% of the original beetle wheel/tyre diameter to keep it close. Maybe speedycables can calibrate for the diameter of the wheel/ tyre combo you are going to use. I suspect they would reprint the dial to compensate.

If you follow the link on their website for Speedometer calibration it says you have to give them a whole bunch of measurements for them to be able to re-calibrate the Speedo. I.am guessing therefore that they do more than reprint the dial and actually have the calibration tools to make the adjustments.
