Porsche pricing is certainly ambitious at times, and I agree their parts are sometimes no better than other repros. (My personal love is for original parts, ideally not needing refurb or sympathetically done to keep some patina, also not cheap ...).

To close my accidental diversion into negativity, I have found this is an area where the indie expert again shows their value. I've had lots of really helpful advice from Barry, Fenn Lane Chris, Garry, Steve Monk, others, even from my OPC about which bits must come from Porsche, which repros are fine / better, general cost-benefit analysis. Thanks guys!

Meanwhile, on the positive side, I have remembered how to put the pedal box back together:

Left rear suspension and brakes more-or-less ready to bolt on.
Chris at Fenn Lane did this bit of refurbishment for me, including the rear calipers. It turned out really well, I think: thanks Chris!

Just catching up on your thread Richard, GBP 25k for an engine rebuild is totally bonkers. Mine was around EUR 13k (from memory +8% Swiss VAT), including new Mahle Pistons, re-nikasil'd cylinders, GT3 oil pump, new con rods, lightweight pretty much everything, lots of machining etc. Mine was done in Germany at Boxer-Motoren, who have a very good reputation. Mine is a 79 3.0 SC engine (matching numbers engine is at home in the UK), which is now a 3.2 SS running 46mm PMOs, so no MFI rebuild required and maybe a bit cheaper, but mine has been heavily tricked up. However, Manching in Germany is a few hours drive from my weekday bachelor pad in Zurich, so convenient for me.

I too am just catching up. Some prices quoted are nonsense, but not all. As Richard demonstrates, loading and unloading heavy items involves labour, capital and a certain amount of risk. The customer has to pay for it - it can be softed through another charge or set out explicitly as he or she prefers. I didn't quite get all this either this when I consumed these services - it was only when I started providing them that it became clear

Yep. Not saying my one optimistic bloke with a trolley jack scheme is best practice, and definitely would not be OK in a "proper" environment - if I drop my own engine or break my own leg I'm an idiot, but if I cause that to happen to a customer's engine or an employee's leg I am liable.

The Ex Eric Clapton.... blah blah blah

I will admit that I find the high-end car ads, which invariably state the most minor of celebrity associations, a bit silly. The ex Vidal Sassoon Ferrari 328, with bespoke comb holder, blah blah blah.
I should say I used to find them a bit silly. Until today. Today I have established beyond reasonable doubt that my car is ex Eric Clapton.

So now I've decided it's cool. 8)

Thanks to James for pointing me in the right direction:

Rock and roll car from the 70s - very cool but I would give the seats and carpets a good wash. Lord only knows what has gone on in there.

Always cool to have that kind of history as I think you bond more with the car, now knowing and being able to imagine it as a new car and the following life it’s lead 8)

I think you're right, well put.

I've just found the bit in Bobby Whitlock's autobiography where he describes Eric going out for the day from Hurtwood, coming home, appearing with this orange 911S, and giving him the keys. It's fun to imagine that first run back from London to Surrey with Clapton driving.

That’s just a brilliant little period video clip.
There’s a lot of little details to pick up from that, which I am sure you will do Richard, but the most obvious to me is the stance of a new early 911. Most restorations don’t get close that ride height, stance or corner balancing correct. When it’s all right an early 911 seems to ‘float’ over the road as it does in that little clip.

Brilliant

Regards
Mike

Hi Mike,

Agree, they did seem to set them up pretty low and it looked good! Also I know everyone claims the factory just chucked them together and we can do better now on quality, but (in a fleeting glimpse) the paint and door gaps look rather nice.

To be honest this clip has caused me a bit of inner turmoil. It does look very nice in standard spec, and now I know 100% how my actual car looked when brand new, I'm almost tempted to revert to Plan A and finish the car exactly like this... rear wiper, front overriders, hideous S sill trims and all... Hmmmmm.

Cheers, Richard.
