On to the Radio.

I know popular culture would have you believe that “measure twice, cut once” is the way to go but I tend to favour the “measure once, cut loads of times and swear a lot”. It’s not for everyone but it works for me.

And in place

As a Brucey bonus I found that if I cut the tabs off the heater chrome surround, it fitted fairly well on top of the black one - with a bit of glue it will be good to go I reckon

Next it was on to the other air vent. Now with the drivers one it was part of a continuous run of ally strip so it had a clear place to sit. For the passenger one it would sit on its own - but it still needed to be framed by the ally.

I thought about this for a while and decided to glue a strip to it top and bottom. I also decided to turn the strip sideways so there was a bit of a ‘tail’ there to give a bigger glueing area.

As luck would have it, the ‘rails’ of the strip aren’t the same size in both profiles so I therefore had to hand file them down the to correct thicknessImage

During the sanding of the vent itself I realized I needed a disc or belt sander so added another toy to the workshop

This made it much easier to get it to the right thickness

So then onto the glovebox door....

I took two goes to cover the top part - eventually using a former to help

When covering the door the material folds over the edge of the ally strip. I didn’t want this to add to the width of the thing so I marked out the thickness of the material

Then carefully filed it away by hand...

Finally nearly there

Image

I’ve still had a few gotchas - the fit between the glovebox door and the pad underneath is so tight that if you cover it in black vinyl the door wont open properly.

I took off the covering and it worked fine. I’ve now ordered two of the knee pads in black

It’s been a massively complex job overall - so many little things to sort out but ultimately I’m really pleased with how it’s turned out. I’ll post another pic once I’ve got the new knee pads in place
