OK so a bit more progress....
Firstly a fuckup on my part. If you remember the mounting tabs for my hazard warning switch had snapped off (probably by me when removing it). I found a second had one on eBay with the tabs and ordered it for £50 delivered.
The switch arrived yesterday, and I unwrapped it whilst driving back to work. Sure enough it looked fine and the tabs were intact. “So these are the things that snapped” I thought while squeezing them in to see how they flex. Except they didn’t flex. They snapped, instantly. I’d had the part in my had for all of 30 seconds and managed to break it in that time.
I’m putting it down to 35 year old plastic becoming brittle. This morning I thought ‘sod the expense’ - I’ll order new ones from the OPC. Spoke to Keith at Nottingham OPC and ordered one in. “How much is that?” I asked. Keith replied “Well with the discount it’s £50.80”.
Hmmmmmm.
During the week I also bought some thin steel. This slides inside the aluminium moulding and is what the basket weave is actually glued to. When I measured the original one I had it was only about 0.6mm thick.
My local metal merchants didn’t have anything thinner than 1mm so I bought some of that. That actually worked out fine.
Ian had some basket weave left over so he let me use some of that . I wanted to try dying it to match the rest of my interior and I had a little bit of dye left over from doing the seats, so I gave it a try
