Dedication to the cause! Do regular E type restorations get this level of detailing?

I'm all out of superlatives for this work of Barry's.
I might meet him one day and see if he wears a wizard's hat.

I've seen a great 'tub' being done at CMC a few years back, no idea if the panels are as period-detailed as I'm no E Type expert but that was very impressive, it was a river-bed find of a USA E Type.
I love the methodical understanding and execution of this build, it is not a 'cellette' job where everything seems to be positioned so readily, this one needed some forethought and the results, to me, show through.
Great thread overall, with a very special chapter here.

I feel there is still some way to go until it is off to a painter?

Wow! Incredible workmanship!

One thing, though: it's put me off ever owning an E-Type!

Thanks guys

Timing is all in hand....never fear... 8)

As to whether other E’s get so much attention....I have my doubts...I have never seen or read about anyone blending the floors into one...nor dealing with the cill to floor junction as we have....it’s a meeting of similar attitudes for this restoration....which is why it’s such a pleasure

As I mentioned at the beginning we are further on in real time" 8) ....More soon.......

Thanks for looking

E Type 888330

Great stuff JP

It’s debatable whether you should see someone about your problem. No doubt that you’ve got a serious problem; debatable whether anyone could help you with it.
The simple things you see are all complicated

So with the inner tub now stable and the outer cills modified to the correct profile it was time to fit them……but not before all the inner surfaces were cleaned and prepped firstly with zinc rich weld through primer and then after masking with a generous epoxy primer treatment

Image

Image

At this point the tub began to take on a much more finished appearance, especially when the driver’s door was trial fitted….this allowed the cills to be fine-tuned and ensure a decent parallel gap to the doors lower edge

Image

Image

And with the addition of the front scuttle closer panel all began to look really promising

Image

Sadly once we turned to focus attention on the drivers door, the cleaning up revealed the skin was not as good as we had initially thought, so a new skin was ordered….the Envirostrip cleaning process is good, but if there are any downsides it is that accumulated crud (after the heat treatment) ends up sitting within cavities and that not all parts of the crimped or spot-welded junctions can be deep cleaned….so for the sake of longevity we agreed to replace both door skins…which did turn out to be a wise move as once the skins were removed more surface rust was exposed along the frame edges

Removal of the door skins also entailed removing and replacing the damaged drainage channels that fits to the upper leading edge of the door frame…..and it allowed us to include another signature touch which was to include proper and better internal drainage tubes…..both from these drainage trays but also from the other drain hole at the front of the door

Image

The sketch that Barry did is included as it shows how we focussed on directing this water straight to the front drain hole in the door bottom edge

Image

A classic problem with E Type doors is stress cracks that appear along the top of the inner frame, so based off some research of how other owners have dealt with this issue Barry made up an inner bent angle section and with careful spot welding and brazing built up this inner reinforcement piece to ensure it lasts better than the original design

Gorgeous……

The passenger side was always going to be more work, as the earlier accident damage had revealed

We didn’t quite expect the inner door frame to have suffered as a result of the impact, but once the outer skin was catalogued for posterity, including the typical US approach to repair work it was evident that much more straightening was required

Image

It is a methodical piece of work and required numerous methods to straighten the frame, repair various stress cracks and let in clean metal

Both door frames were then coated with epoxy primer prior to re-skinning which used a combination of crimping and welding

Image

Image

and once the damaged inner scuttle closer panel was fabricated (another story of poor repair sections .....).....

we were looking at a pretty complete main shell.....for the first trial fit of the doors....

These may now be the best (for which read most expensive) restored doors in the E Type world…but its fun….

JP, that is looking truly awesome. Love how it all looks like it’s carved from a single block of billet. Having that peace of mind from all the seams and epoxy and all sorts is great too.

Fabulous project.

Nice.
I reckon they made those holes with a gun. To use up some commie liberal non-armour-piercing bullets they got for Christmas.
Great work as ever, Mr Parr.

Good stuff. Looks like you dodged a bullet by re-skinning the doors.
