Stonechip paint

Post by gridgway »

I had a problem where my tyres rubbed the inside of the rear arches, not the lip, but the actual arch itself. I painted over the bare metal with simple grey primer until the problem was resolved, which it now is.

The question is about making good. the areas are not large and the surrounding finish is some form of stonechip textured paint. The question is what do I use to make it good? Thoughts welcome!

Thanks
Graham

IMO - the solution is just buy a decent rattle can of black stonechip and cover the damaged area to leave it protected, this is a running repair rather than a restoration. I've used Hammerite stone chip seal for localised repairs and nothing wrong with it, and there are loads of similar products. However, if you've access to an airline and proper schutz gun then there are prossibly better products you could use, but as said this is a running repair.......

Had this years ago when hill climbing the 911, outer arch paint burnt, inner polished to bare metal by hard cornering/fat tyres.

I just keep painting the inner areas with black Smoothrite (the whole underside of the car is painted in the stuff). Annual maintenance.

My recommendation would be clean it up and paint it with epoxy mastic - the stuff is borderline bulletproof. Then cover it with schultz (or whatever it’s called) stone chip paint to make it look right
This is what I’ve done on the inner wings of one of my cars and it’s lasted amazingly well - there have been a few tyre rubs that removed the stone chip but not the epoxy mastic which makes it a simple cover-up job to rectify after

Clean area up and apply a good primer on the bare metal. Then spray Upol Gravitex with Shultz gun over area fading in to match original. Rattle cans tend to be over thinned to allow the flow through the spray nozzle. Colour as required.

See above - rather than primer, epoxy mastic goes straight onto bare metal and is rock hard

Is that Epoxy Mastic 121? I will only need a little and it comes in £40 quantities!

Yes, very tempting, but I'd waste most of it and it only has a 12 months shelf life!

You used to be able to purchase 0.5 and 1 litre quantities from eBay - I brought 1 litre and did the entire engine bay and the whole underneath of my e36
Best brushed on in my experience and can be sanded to give a dead smooth finish if required prior to top coat

Where are you Graham ?. I'm in Fleet (GU51) and have an open pot of 121 if you just need a splash or two.
