356sc restoration

Post by Peter Roberts »

Finally got her back after 2 years in storage and started the restoration . Current condition is pretty good with great interior but i am only going to do this once at my age so its going to be complete job including engine out for detailing, gearbox out for selector problem, new brakes, suspension, carpets, all chrome parts replated and whatever i find on the way.
So far a little rust found in front offside footwell area but sills, longitudinals and rear suspension mounts in good condition so a promising start. Interior is out but cannot work out how to remove the rear parcel shelf trim. I believe it is secured by pins that go through the fire wall so to remove i need to remove the insulation in the engine compartment to get to the pins. Is this correct?
Now i have started i am sure my posting rate will rocket as i get find in need of solutions so i may be looking for a lot of the expertise that's out there in DDK land.

OK i will try to document the Resto. But first the problem is uploading pics.

Well that seems to have worked for the first time in ages. Must write down what i did to upload them
Car looks good in current condition but after 15 years of use, storage, use and finally 2 years storage its time to start a big restoration.
So far stripped out the interior and on the hunt for rust. To my pleasant surprise the only rust issue is in front of the A post on the offside where the panels have rusted away on the bottom. This will need some repair panels fitted and welding. some small holes in the top of the sills where it has rusted from the top down due to moisture under the rubber sill cover. Few other small holes in various places but overall the sills, longitudinals, inner sills, battery box and floor pan are all good so i can spend my money on other goodies.
Luckily just about every screw and bolt come loose without too much trouble and it was an easy strip of the interior. Just broke one accelerator peddle bolt and a seat belt eyebolt.
Biggest problem so far on only a partial strip is what to do with all the bits as they take up so much space. So bought myself a plastic wheelie bin shed and a number of plastic storage boxes so parts are segregated and labelled in separate boxes so i know where to find them when i get to reassemble it.
Plan is as follows.
Obviously a complete bare metal respray in the original White Ivory
Interior is good but cards behind the door upholstery and rear panels are bad so will be replaced.
Front axle out and refurbished.
Steering box needs new seals
Engine out for detailing as it runs perfectly.
Gearbox out as suspect selector problem.
New discs, shocks, refurbished calipers, master cylinder and brake hoses.
All new window seals
New clutch assembly
Complete rechrome of all parts
All carpets already on order.

I had planned on converting to 12 volt but this forum advised with everything refurbished to top condition and a good battery it will work OK
I am now retired so hope that it will be a 6 month job not a 6 year job so lets see how we go.
Next job is to get it up on the lift and take out the petrol tank and under bonnet bits together with the bumpers and lights.
I will keep you posted

Peter I have fixed it for you
If you press the quote button on the right at the bottom you will see the code
one line of which was like this Image[/img] as for most of the pictures and I have taken out the "[img]" at the start and end to make it work.
You do not need to press any of the buttons at the top when transferring the code from postimage which may have been the issue

The car looks lovely
Good luck with it

What a difference a week makes
Image
From a tidy garage to a lot of boxes of bits all over the place. All labeled so i hopefully remember where they go.
So far stripped out interior, under bonnet, bumpers and all lights.
Its obvious some major work has been done n this before i bought it but to a very good standard. All sills and longitudinals and floor are solid. Some small holes in the floor and rear seat but pedal box area and rear torsion bar mounts are all good.Only major rust area was behind the A Post where the door opens into. Repair panels are on order and i have an expert guy who transforms old escorts into rally replicas coming to do the welding.
Only a few bolts proved troublesome but i needed to be a contortionist to remove things like rear lights, fuel cock split pins, fuel tank neck flanges but all came out in the end.
Below are hopefully some photos. Compiled this post then added photos and lost the lot so if they are not on this post i will send another of just the photos.

I am trying to locate the millboard that is used as the stiffener in the door cards and covers the sound insulation in the engine compartment. Not available from Porsche or it seems other suppliers .
Anyone able to point me in the right direction to source this material. Its 3mm thick, stiffer than cardboard but not as firm as hardboard which only comes in 4mm.

William Marston in Birmingham show 2.2 mm mill board on their website, but worth phoning them, last time I went there they had all sorts of amazing stock. But I'm sure Ashley will also have info on this. W

Hi there Peter.

I bought a sound deadening kit from Stoddard along with a lot of other parts from the USA when I was restoring mine. The 'millboard' supplied by them looks kind of right, after a coat of satin black, but I have found it tricky to keep it stuck to the inside of the engine compartment, in spite of paying attention to a clean and grease free surface to attach it to.

Looks to be a nice car, substantially complete, but with a few corrosion issues. Mine (Dec '64 build Karmann for the '65 model year so also on a B reg) was almost totally rot free, but had quite a lot of hard to find bits missing. Have fun!

Garry at Classic FX would know where to find some millboard for the door cards. When he did my interior, all the millboard interior sections were in very poor condition, but he re used the door cards and re covered them, but everything else was pretty much new.

Thanks for the information. Have contacted both companies and they have responded positively with samples of the millboard on the way.
Still in need of some front indicator lights and reversing light as the prices of new are steep. Also snapped the studs in the rear overiders so may need some of those if i cannot extract the stud ends

Peter, you may already know of the following resource, but if not you'll find it invaluable:
abcgt.com, a 356 focused forum from the US, very low key and helpful...not that DDK isn't both of those, too; it'll just afford you another nice bunch of experienced guys to help you. Best of luck, John in Connecticut, USA.

Work is progressing well with welding repairs half complete, engine parts plated, powder coated and reassembled and an awful lot of parts sourced and bought ready for the rebuild. As part of the procurment stage made a trip to the platers today to sort out the re chroming of all the shiny bits.
Hit a snag as the bumper overiders and the bonnet crest are made of Mazak ( zinc and alluminium) and they could not do them. If i remove all the existing chrome plating they may be able to do it but they cannot remove it the conventional way.
Has anyone had overiders replated, if so was there a problem and does anyone know who can do this. Location is not a problem as they are small pieces and can be shipped.
If not i could be in the market for replacement overiders and bonnet crest
