Brake Pads

Post by Gone in 60 seconds »

All
I wouldnt normally offer advice ref 911's technically - I m definitely a junior in here compared to soem that post, but got to mention EBC's new Yellow Stuff Brake pads.

I brought them from powerstop.co.uk who generally sell straight to trade but now sell to privateers at trade prices, the pads cost £80 and are £ for £ the best performance upgrade I ve ever made any car. The EBC make three grades Green Stuff which is slightly better than OEM pads, Red Stuff which are perfomance pads recommened for fast road/performance cars such as Lotus', Evo6, Imprezas etc, and yellow stuff that are full track/race grade pads, uniquely they pull up from stone cold and dont emit dust (not astbestos). They have totally transformed my cars driveability, my faith and confidence driving it and its stopping power ten fold without new calipres or new disks - Superb.

Enjoy

Hi James,

I'm going to run through the brakes on my RS this winter. Was considering which pads to use. Those yellows sound powerful and the fact that I intend to do hill climbs / sprints would suit the pads esp as they pull up hard from cold. On these events you are going hard into the first couple of bends on cold binders. But the car is primarily for road use. So what is to stop you using them for regular road use :?: :?:

Is it a high wear rate :?: :?:

Excellent performance from cold is not something you usually associate with race spec brake pads, so it sounds like you've made a great discovery there James.

What's the catch - Feel? Noise? Wear rate?

Please let us know how you get on with them over a longer period.

Ian/Porky
From talking to Powerstop EBC traditionally sold the three styles as

Green OEM
Red - Fast Road/Performance
Yellow - Track/race use

However EBC have jsut rereleased this new generation of Yellowstuff that perform as green in red in terms of immediate bite from cold but with the performance formerly considered only achievable from a full race pad with its natural limitations. the material used to make the pad is apparently quite revolutionary so best of both worlds suitable for the road but track performance without negatives.

As I said I m no expert but I m blown away by the change in my cars braking, which then revolutionises its handling as in my cars case I can brake late with confidence and delicately. I ve been driving the car daily just becuase I ve been enjoying it so much since the change.

My car is vicously fast with 280bhp with a car just weighing in at a ton and these on standard calipers are pulling the car up solidly.

I ll let you know how they last - they bed within 50 miles.

Oh and 0 noise - that was my fear, but none.

Just went on the site - for a 3.2 carrera it recommended redstuff ceramic but I couldn't find a description of this anywhere on the site - only of redstuff - did you phone them to discuss it?

Here you go;

The Ultimate Race Brake Pad for Highly Tuned Cars on both Street and Track

Although a full race material and capable of high temperature use with very good wear life, this new formulation sets a new trend in race type brake pad compounds. The “bite” from cold is superb which is uncommon with race materials (normally requiring warm-up) and makes this a pad which can be safely used on the highway as well as on the race track. This new formulation was used by numerous championship race and rally drivers in 2004 and is truly a milestone in brake pad material development.

Nominal friction coefficient 0.6 with zero rotor damage and low dust.

Thats a good review. My Brother runs Red Stuff on his Saab and its pretty good but they need warming up tho.

Currently running Pagids on my car but plan for new drilled discs before Le Mans so will look at Yellow Stuff.
