Check your clutch cable
Driving back through Grasmere village (in the Lakes) just as it was getting dark last night enjoying the drive, changed gear and as I went through neutral changing gear there was a loud crack like a gun going off and the clutch pedal hit the floor. Luckily I could coast into a handy lay-by to phone the AA. They arrived from 16.20hrs in 25 mins and the mechanic checked the pedal end before going underneath. The cable had parted company just where it goes round the 90 degree bend before the lever on top of the gear box casing. On close inspection he thought that the cable had corroded from the inside out and all the strands appeared to have gone at once, there was no evidence of fraying that you would expect. Unfortunately, he couldn't get enough adjustment at the pedal end to effect a temporary repair so we had to be trailered home. 26 miles later at 7pm, the car having been delivered to my local garage, I have to say what could have been a nightmare was not too bad thanks to the efficiency of the AA. I would recomend anyone joining if like me they can no longer crawl underneath to carry out repairs. The moral of the tale is occasionally check your cables for fraying or any signs of early failure, it may save you a problem like this! Real shame Mike, what would we do without recovery services:oops:
Mine snapped at the pedal stranding me in Crewe (not nice at the best of times!), one side of the clevis had sheared off!
It's just one of those bits you forget about and don't replace, probably worth doing every few years just in case as it's pretty cheap and easy to change.
