Talk to me about exhausts - PLEASE!

Post by Ben Nichols 1979 »

Hi All

Right, I'm approaching the engine going back in and I have a dilemma.

My heat exchangers which I am keeping have 2 pipes into 1 outlet - its a triangular 3 bolt flange. All the exhausts I can find have two pipes into a round, 2 bolt flange. I can only guess that my heat exchangers aren't original. The only option I can find it to replace the existing Bursch system with a like for like but they look terrible.

Does anyone know of a good sounding triangular flange exhaust that will fit? I've tried having one made using the guys suggested on here but they are all too busy or not doing one-offs anymore.

If anyone has any suggestions or ideas please shout.

Thanks

Ben

Sorry I can't help with a solution. The heat exchangers you have sound like the late ones from a 75-76 car. This design was rather restrictive and many people have since backdated to the earlier system. Their lack of popularity is probably the reason you're having trouble finding an alternative.

Best of luck finding something.

Here's a thread about heat exchangers - I'm guessing you have those shown in post 15?

If so you probably need some kind of custom exhaust from somewhere - the are meant places that do them, or try a US supplier and import one

Have a look around for good used heat exchangers or make your own through pipes. You can buy the heads from one (or more) of the aircooled vw sites. The rest is just bend / straight pipe and flat steel for the mating flange.

Will be able to get bends etc from above.

I bought my h/e's and (not so) silencer from stuart. He might remember the make. If not i'll check wednesday and see if i can get more info for you.

Hi Chaps

Yes, I have the later HE's which seem to be impossible to get an exhaust for.

Dean, that would be very helpful.

Thanks

The 'silencer' (it doesn't silence much, but it does make it a bit quieter than the one I replaced it with!) was a bursch which I got got from Roger Bray. There are (or were) a few versions around with different packing levels. I think the one Dean now has was pretty much a straight through exhaust.

New heat exchangers are available - I think mittelmotor sell them in the EU. If you go for a new set then you'll have more exhaust choice including the original style exhaust.

Or if you want something non-stock and loud then there are these your of things (this is what I currently have on mine)

Hi Stuart

I've been looking at the ones from GT Racing but ideally wanted a twin outlet pipe system and they say they can only supply a single pipe system.

If you have any pictures of yours that would be really helpful as the aesthetics of a single outlet was what was putting me off.

Thanks

I've got their euro muffler that's shown on their 914 page. I'm on holiday at the moment but will post a Pic when I get back on Friday.

It might also be worth getting in touch with triad in the US. They make 914 exhausts that are twin outlet - they might be able to make one for your HE'S. Crap website but I've heard they are good to deal with.

Unfortunately Dave at Triad isn't making these anymore due to family health issues. He may resume again in the future but for now he's not doing anything.

I collected a lovely new back box today. I will upload an image later when I am back home. I used TT Exhausts, run by Richard Thomas. We have been talking for a while about what I would like, and he has manufactured what I wanted. He has been a joy to deal with. Others on this forum have used him in the past, I will let them share their recommendations.
