Classic Seat belts

That was interesting reading on the registry link. I guess the diagonal belt on my car is slightly below shoulder height, I know I have little movement at all when the lap and diagonal belts are in place. I always have it tight. It is true, for many years I have wondered, but felt with the steering wheel and metal dash so near they must help. The older I get now in my mid 70's, the speed on normal roads is kept well down but a nice straight road and clear of traffic allows me to use more revs. Trouble is so many accidents happen in ways you never expect. My BMW has the airbags for front and side impact and retractable belts in the correct position.

I do keep my eye's peeled for problems my belt on for what its worth and I avoid wet weather. You take a chance though every time you go out! But....the thought of no seat belt I can't come to terms with. I used to take two of my boys out in the 60's sitting in the back of the 356 with no belts!! I can't believe I did that now. Different world different roads and different mind set.

Out in garage today I found the full page 1964 AFN price list for all accessories to retrofit on the new cars when they came in to Isleworth.

On the list for 1964 were a set of 'Irvine' lap and diagonal seat belts priced at £4-15 shillings. To fit them they would charge £ 0.15 shillings for each side.

In 1959 they must have doing the same but I don't have a price list to see if they used Britex belts then.

Most T6 Australian cars had the option from Hamiltons (the importer and agent) of having an 'aircraft' type belt with lap, and sometimes sash. Each market had its own preferred type. I found three point belts on my car from the last owner of 50 odd years. The webbing had been redone according to then Australian regulations. They seem to be of US origin (Hickock) and similar to the early 911 buckles.

Nothing of a period nature is perfect in these cars, but with care and some luck on the road they can do a good job.

I'm sold on the benefits of seat-belts but am still struggling with the best mounting solution for a three point belt:

There must be a similar solution for the side panel mounts (under rear quarter light) as per the factory mounting points shown above.

Not sure what car you have Martin as it doesn't show on your footer, but my '62 has the mounting points already installed with the eye bolts as show on the floor and bolt-in points in the rear side panels.

OK then, if an A it probably won't have the mounts installed. I seem to recall the standard mounts started with the T5. Off to work now so will take some photos of mine when I get home tonight. They are the stock T6 ones as above. Edit - did you want photos of the mounts from under the car? Here you go Martin. The under car frame was there already on each side of the T6B, as was the inner mount point in the rear panel.

Those built in mounts have a different thread to the bolts normally supplied with seat belt kits. Sorry but I'm at home right now and don't have the sizes with me. I'll look them up tomorrow and re-contribute. I got the eye bolts with the correct thread & pitch direct from Willans.

I've a feeling they were M11 fine pitch but don't quote me!

Most of these had the finer pitch on internal fittings. Dealer fitted generally I believe.

Most belt fittings are 7/16unf, but M10 fine is also used in some cars.
