I'm having a lot of difficulty fitting the big rubber gasket and as a result the oil tank, as it appears the hole is too small. I can't imagine why anyone would have ever modified the aperture but I have no original measurements for reference.
Would anyone who has easy access to this aperture on their car be prepared to take some accurate measurements for me to compare with my car. The measurements need to be taken from a 1973 E.

From memory, it's a real pita job fitting the rubber and tank . I'd imagine the problem lies with the pattern rubber seal. Do you still have the original ?

Re: Rear inner wing aperture for oil tank neck and gasket
That is so true.
I replaced that sod of a seal back in '89 using a real Porsche part.
It never fitted well.
The panel is original 1973, un welded etc.
Just done an oil change and noted the gasket is displaced making the filter a real pain to replace.
Pulling the tank into place can make things worse.
A pattern part today could be really bad compared to my real factory part, can understand your frustration.
Suggest fitting the thing after getting it very hot in hot water and work quickly.
Make sure you can get the filter in off the tank after it is all in.

Yes I was trying to fit a pattern gasket which feels more solid than an original. Porsche one now on order so hopefully this will make a difference.
If anyone has easy access to the aperture I'm still keen to compare measurements.
Thanks.
