Tyre Help - Michelin Pilots

In the middle of my backdate project and I'm now fitting the tyres onto my refurb'd 15" Fuchs.

When I last bought tyres (For my previous 17" cup wheels) I was advised by 930 Motorsport to make sure the rears had an "N" in the size as this indicated that they had strengthened sidewalls which were required for the rear because of all that weight back there.

The garage ordering the tyres has sorted these out for me now - initially they'd ordered Bridgestone S02's which I've had previously, but they supplied the wrong size (16"). These were sent back and a new set came today.

These are Michelin Pilots (there was another name after that but I can't remember which) 205/55's and 225/50's - all ZR15 91W

I can't see any mentioned of the mysterious "N", but understand from other searches that the 91 relates to the tirewall stiffness.

The question is - are these suitable for my 911? (It's an '87 3.2 being backdated to 73 spec)

Are they 'Sport' or 'Primacy'?

I have the Sports on my Turbo (and previously on my 3.2) and the Primacy's on my '72 car and everyday Merc.

Whilst the Primacy's hang on well, they squeal an awful lot if you push them (ask me how I know

) and are also a good mileage tyre.

However, for a more performance oriented car (such as a 3.2), I'd opt for the Sports every time.

Just my opinion.

The only time letters are used on tyres other than for the R for radial is for the speed rating, however N's are rated at 87mph so I doubt this is what he was refering to most high performance tires will be at least V rated which is 150mph. The 91 you refer to is the load load index which basically is related to the load carrying capacity of the tire this is a new introduction in recent years to tire ratings so I would imagine you would have difficulty fining a recommendation for this for an early car. A tire with a load rating of 91 can carry a load of 615kg per tire so I think they should be sufficient for a 1150kg car.

There are such things as 'N' ratings for tyres e.g. N0, N1, N2 etc. depending on [tyre] manufacturer and they usually have some kind of significance for either mid production revisions or [car] manufacturer requirements.

All a bit of a minefield really...
