1973 Porsche 911E RHD – Silver

It has been a while since my last update but I am pleased to say that paintwork commenced a few of weeks ago at Limn Historics.





I visited Limn yesterday and saw that Graham has made an excellent start. I decided to go for a "factory" finish and having furnished Graham with reference photos, saw that he had used these well to achieve the correct finish with the under-seal. I'll post some photos soon.

Previously, Darren had kindly pointed out that the detail to the rear slam panel needed adjusting here:



I called John at Chesterton's and he admitted there was a flaw and he promptly addressed this. Thank you Darren for pointing this out.

Actually Gitesh I think I was a little misleading initially and you taught me something

Through Gitesh I learnt that rear slam panel with the raised lozenge shaped outward pressing intended for 1974 model year actually found its way onto a number of late build 73MY cars, Porsche had probably run out of the old panels at that stage. Not exactly when this would have happened but my guess would be late spring from the reference photos I have. This is an original paint May 73 built car....

My number one criteria was to have the best rust protection, which I have stressed to Graham many times, but I wasn't too bothered about which paint brand we chose to use. Graham had originally considered using PPG branded products, which he uses regularly, but was impressed with the lengths Glasurit had gone to providing paint products for classic cars so he decided to use this instead. These are the processes and products he has been principally following:







Here are some photos of the car stripped down and some of the preparation thereafter:





















Cleaning and degreasing was followed by two coats of epoxy primer:























There wasn't much filler required on the body, largely due to the high standard of work completed by Chestertons and the new panels I expect. Filler applied where necessary and then primer followed:

I went so see Graham yesterday and the car is looking great. I'm a little behind in posting photos and we should be getting paint on in the next few weeks.

Seam sealing followed and was applied to all joins:

Underseal
Here Graham used the Teroson products that Darren used on his 911E. Graham commented that it was a superb product and great to work with so thank you, Darren.

Having studied reference photos of original '73 cars, Graham has gone to great lengths to get the various textures of the underseal just right. I think he has done a great job:

Wings, doors, bumpers, engine lid and sunroof
Quite a bit of prep work required on these since they were used parts. Firstly, Graham removed the paint from the engine lid and rear bumper centre panel:
























Previous filler work by the previous owner had led to the sunroof not closing properly. Graham moved this and prepared the panel:








Graham prepared the doors that John and Gary supplied. Just the very top of the black factory e-coat was scrubbed off the door skins without fully removing the protection:

Moving onto the outside of the shell, preparation and cleaning was followed by epoxy primer:







































That's all the updates I have for now. You all have a great eye for detail so please let me know if anything looks amiss.

We expect the car to completed in the next month or so. For the paint, we are planning to use either Glasurit 90 line (water based) or Glasurit 55 line (solvent based). I think Graham is leaning a little towards the 90 line and I am for the 55 line. What are your thoughts and experiences with these please?

Such a nice stage getting the shell in epoxy and the quality looks superb
