Door release mechanism query

Post by AndrewSlater »

Can somebody knowledgeable tell me when Porsche changed the door mechanisms to go from a solid bar to a bowden cables on the door handle release?

The reason I ask is that on the '77 PET it shows a Bowden cable , however my '74 cars original passenger door doesn't have the mounting holes on the door for the bowden cable support.
Would I be correct to guess it should have a rod, or does it take a Bowden cable with a different support?
Is there a better PET I should be using?

The replacement drivers door I bought is a slightly later version and does have the Bowden cable mounting holes, so matches the PET I have.
Do I need to go with a Bowden cable on this side or can I also use rods?

As always any help would be much appreciated.

I think they were introduced on the 3.2 with central locking in 1984, but all parts are interchangeable with a small amount of work

Arrived in '77 when the round lock/unlock dial arrived on the door card.

Thanks for the quick response Nick - much appreciated.

What's confusing me is that the '77 PET shows the Bowden cable but doesn't show a pull rod solution - I was expecting it to show more than one option as it should cover '74 cars.

The Bowden cable is item 25 and the supports 26 and 27.

Would mine be closer to the '73 PET or is there a better PET I should be using?

Thanks John and Nick, I think I can use my pull rods on both doors - just need to work out what is missing.

In other news I got my door frames out of the loft.

So my drivers one (LHD) has corroded through on the rear upright above the bottom fixing.

Anyone know if the rear upright replaceable or repairable?

Otherwise I probably need a replacement one.

Nick I know you refurbish door frames - what are my options?
