'Motorsport' Rocker Shafts

Post by fetuhoe »

Porsche Motorsport used to offer 'Surface Treated' Rocker Shafts to use with the 906 Style Rockers used on all Porsche Race engines up to the 935 but they have been NLA for years.

As part of the development of new Forged Rocker Arms we started producing similar shafts a few years ago.

These shafts are manufactured using a 300MVAR Steel and have been surface treated using a Nitrotec Process which produces a surface hardness of around 1000HV with much lower levels of friction than a hard chrome.

The shafts have been precision ground to a very close tolerance to an Ra of around 0.5microns which is recommended for use with the Bi-metallic bearings used in the 911 rocker arm as this surface finish will retain an oil film and improve the lubrication of the bearing.

Cost is £225.00 per engine set of 12 shafts including UK Shipping.

Hi Chris,
Interesting.
Are the forged rocker arms also available?
Thanks, Richard.

The forged Rocker Arms are also manufactured from 300M VAR Steel and have been hardened and double tempered.

They are machined, shot peened, isotropically superfinished and then surface treated to 1000HV Hardness using the same process as the rocker shafts.

This finish is harder and more wear resistant than the hard chrome used by Porsche on the 1965/66 Rocker arms.

The heel of the rocker has also ben lengthened to the same dimension as the 906 Rocker and this provides a better solution than the standard part when used with high lift cams such as 906 and RSR profiles where the standard pad length is just a little short and can accelerate wear.

The Rockers are fitted with a Glyco bush that has been used by Porsche for many years, they are precision honed after installation.

The Rocker ratio of these arms is the nominal 1.5:1 of the RSR Rocker and tis ratio is very consistent across each set of rockers.

We made them for use in Period F Appendix K Race Cars where cast rockers tend to need routine replacement due to the potential for fatigue failures.

The selection of the material ensures excellent fatigue performance on high rpm engines and we have been supplying them to race teams for around 5 years now.

The 'mass elastic' behaviour of the rocker is also identical to the original component and this should help to avoid any potential issues due to valve spring resonances.

They are not the cheapest rocker arm in the world at £120.00 each but comparable rockers made by Schrick are around £250 each !

We did sell our last 'stock' set of rockers last week but we have another batch of forgings that are machined and currently being superfinished. I would anticipate they will be ready to ship in around 4 weeks depending on our sub-contractors holiday shut down..

We also have Titanium Valve Spring Retainers manufactured from 6AL4V Titanium and coated in a Ti Carbide to eliminate the possibility of galling that can otherwise occur between the spring and the retainer.

They work with stock sized or Eibach valve springs and they are £120 per set and we do have stock.

We have some other valve train parts in development but all the above parts have been in production for several years and are providing reliable service in many race engines.
