1958 Porsche 356a coupe RHD.

I think my OPC charged me £120 plus VAT/hr for my water cooled car, but they indicated to me that the rate is lower for "classic" porsches (although I wouldn't think that much lower) as they are wanting to increase their classic work.

Good to see you over here from the PCGB forum, you will get some great advice here.
Thanks Roy for linking through to my post on ABCGT I would recommend looking at the home restoration projects that are being posted there, in most cases these are just everyday guys with a garage, a few tools and a lot of enthusiasm and patience.

Can I ask a few questions to help you work out the value of what you have bought?

What is the chassis number?
What are the engine numbers (you said there was a spare in the deal)?
Have you ordered a Certificate of Authenticity from PCGB? (this will determine if the car is matching numbers)?

More pictures would also help identify how much work there is to do.

A brief update:
Got her up on my 2 post lift, looking a lot better than initially thought. New floor and sills have been welded in and looks a cracking job, most if not all of the other panels required appear to be there too.
Also, I have one complete engine with all components plus 2 other spare engine blocks.
I did notice the wheels are maybe not correct tho', they are stamped VW.
Can someone point me in the right direction for establishing which, if any of these engines is the original one.

Hi Phil
As I said before if you are a member of PCGB you can get a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity for your car which will state the engine and gearbox numbers that were fitted to your car.
There are other ways to see which engine you have will be in the correct range for your car one of them is to enter your chassis number into the Vin database on the 356 Registry US website.
Also posting the details here will allow DDK members to help you out.

Drew is correct, give us the engine numbers stamped on the crankcase and its easy for us to give you the year range and type. As Drew says then you could if the engine types seem correct pay for the Certificate for actual proof by number.

There are many #'s on the engine cases. Mating #'s, showing the 3 parts were originally assembled together, can be found on case bosses on the flywheel end, and also on the third piece close to the two halves. The build sequence # and engine type #'s are next to each other near the center of the case. The serial # is above the pulley. If the mating #'s match, then the build, type and serial should also be matching. Some of us have good databases to help identify if the engine could match the chassis. Or you could get the Kardex from someone such as myself and know what the original #'s are for the car. There are lots of #'s on the transmission also which help to identify what it is and when it was made.

Your car is RHD and an 356A. Possible it was imported by AFN in Isleworth. Mike Smith of PR services might look at the original reg number if you have it and advise if it was sold by AFN. Then for a nominal fee he could send you info on the car. He did that for me. Pleased to get that.

Just a brief update.
Applied for the certificate of authenticity from Porsche which arrived this morning. (Took them 6 weeks!).
The car has matching engine and gearbox.
So, that's good news.
