911 stuck in reverse and 5th

Post by trimblitz »

Hi all
My 1971 2.4T is immobile after reversing it off a transport. I'm pretty sure it's in reverse and didn't come out and picked up 5th at the same time. The wheels are locked.

Got it on my lift and took off the gearbox selector inspection plate. I can see that the selector rod ball has come out of the selector rod guide.

Before I jump in trying to fix this could anyone tell me it there's a method to it ?

Thanks
Richard

The cover on the bottom has a fork on it that holds the rod in place.

Try moving the shafts with a big screwdriver to get enough clearance to put the ball back in the shaft.

Not sure why it should jump out unless the fork is very worn.

Just looking again, you may have to pull out the split pin to move the lever enough to get it back in place.

The later 915 boxes had an aluminium cover rather than magnesium. I replaced mine during a rebuild due to a small crack that always leaked.

Thanks for the advice chaps.

Pushed the selector to get it out of 5th. It was then just stuck in reverse. Didn't want to take out the reverse light switch.

Eased the shift between reverse and neutral and out it came. Seems to select all gears except maybe 4th but I haven't driven it yet.

Can't see how the link jumped free in the first place?
The fork on the cover plate is a crude bit of cast steel, what does it look like?

HI Richard

the 915 box that has stuck is 2 gears, is usualy down the the selector forks out of alinment, usualy 5th/Rev not connecting with the selector shaft and the 5th/Rev shaft in the end of the box, as you have worked out by re-setting the selector you can see through the selector plate hole, re-fitting the plate and then moving the lever out of Rev,

you will need to first check you gear lever bushes and the lever adjustment, if the lever is not turning the selector shaft fully when selecting 5th/Rev , you could leave it in Rev

the lever you can see in the photos, only selects 1st-2nd, 3rd-4th selectors

The guide on the cover plate is in good order and the machined guides in it are good.

I agree that it could be selector alignment. The gearbox had no probs previously but the engine has just been out for work.

Still cannot see how the selector arm that locates in the fork is out of place.
Maybe Mike can explain.
As to adjustment of the gear lever, LM sure we all how our own way to sort it out but it is very easy to adjust for 1/2 plane, 3/4 plane and have those gate positions too far to the left of the shifter pot looking in plan view from the drivers side.
You need to allow 1st to be a few mm from the forward slot and smack in the middle of its groove to allow the box detects to rest in their location when in that gear and hands off.
I find if I get 1st positioned correctly then the rest fall in line with no further fussing.
This has worked on my post 72 large alloy pot gear tower, stock , stock with Porsche short shift (yuk) and my lovely Rennsport shifter, now converted to 15% short shift from 30%.
Hope this all works out for you.
I've had 3 box rebuilds done by MB Engineering, all perfect.
He might be doing another one soon due to operator error...
