As has been said before, all of the cars are perfectly usable in modern traffic. As many know, I drive my PreA a lot include continental trips (Switzerland this year).

At the risk of being pedantic, I am moved to pick a nit.

The T1 As included some '57s that began production in Dec. of '56, and continued to something like Mar. of '57, at which point the T2 As were phased in (in a gradual transition (except for serial no.s that immediately went to 6 digits), but there was no "1 1/2") that were themselves built thru the '59 model year. The T2's had the "trademark" visual cues (teardrop tails and shine-ups, etc.) that lasted thru the T6 Cs.

Here's a couple of 'Merican cents worth about desirability...

There's 2 schools of thought about any car's desirability: Some like the purity of early versions and some want the most updated (or "modern", hence restomods). In our case, the pre-As are the most charming but are the least drivable of the line. I have a '57 T1 A that is just the one I most wanted.

The T1 was the first presentation of all the basic mechanical features (save the disc brakes... which are easily fitted to the T1 with no need to muckle the car's "originality") that were used, pretty much unchanged, for the rest of 356 production, while maintaining most of the charm of the earlier version. With a little sensitive updating, the T1 will drive as well as any (non-Carrera) production 356. This may have something to do with their (the T1s) current popularity.

I have put about 125K mi (w/total chassis mi. @ abt. 250K mi.) on my T1 (including a few cross-(US)continent jogs), and I've smiled all the way.

For my 2 peneth, buy the car with the best body within your budget, convertible/speedster/roadster for me are the best, considering the time of year and weather you are likely be to using the 356.

Another factor that was part of my decision in getting back into the 356 world was the 356 community and the number of events. I personally feel 356 owners are friendlier and less pretensious that modern porsche owners.
