Steering wheel squeak

Post by murph2309 »

Mine does - a lot. I used to find it endearing, but now its a bit irritating.

Has anyone got any suggestions for getting rid? It sounds like it's quite near the top of the column rather than being from the steering box. Is it just a case of take the wheel off and squirt some oil in?

Thanks

My guess is it will be the horn contact on the slip ring. Light smear of grease and it will be sorted! :)

Hi Richard
It will probably be the plastic cowl around the indicator stalks, I think you will have to remove the wheel to remove the cowl, these are a little fragile and it may not be fitted just so, and is rubbing the back of the wheel. A little Vaseline may help.

+1 for the horn contact ring. Mine was making an almighty grating sound, but a smear of electrical grease fixed it in an instant.

I was very pleased to find this thread and was able to stop in a lay-by on the way back from Scotland and eliminate my steering wheel squeak with some wd40 on the horn contact area.

My Boxster does it too and my old 911 sometimes.
911 is too loud to really hear it, can hear the Boxster all the time, just off dead ahead, so, 40 years on, Porsche still have problems!
