might have found my own answer . Looks like my stick is the original but to go with my original 'alloy spacer' tank that "ve got sat on a shelf waiting to be restored one day.
When I fitted the early post 74 tank I assumed it was the same dimensionally , but looks like it holds its volume lower down thus I need a longer dipstick ! This could explain why I've been putting in more like 12 litres in the tank as the dipstick is wrong .
Altjough , from the esses thread many do fill with 13 quarts but "m assuming thats with the thermo open
My 73 is also 250mm long, with min @ 240mm and max @ 175. The oil tank that belongs with that dip stick is the 73 with the alu. oil filter console. In 74 when Porsche went to the tank with no alu. console, (the filter screws right onto the tank) they increased capacity by about 1 QT, all at the bottom of the tank. The dip stick that goes with that tank is 295mm long, with min @265mm and max at 190mm. The long stick would lower your oil level by 15mm. The oil level sender listed above is run in conjuction with the new dip stick but will lower oil level. The proper oil level sender for 73 only is 911 641 541 00. Some of the printed parts manuals say to use the 901 sender and PET does a supersession to the new sender but both are in error. Gordon P.S. Some cars need their oil levels lower so they dont puke oil, so late sender and dip stick might be a good choice.
I have always thought that you underfill the whole system to allow for some expansion of the oil when up to working temperature. Perhaps someone could correct this assumption?

I've always tried to fill to midway between max and min ( although obviously the discovery of the wrong stick makes a mockery of this )
