Alternator Conversion
It seems that every time I get back on the road somthing else comes along to hinder 912 ownership.
Today a flickering charge light and than flat battery after sitting in tragic for an hour has prompted my thoughts into looking at an alternator conversion.
I'm only getting 8 volts at idle from the dynamo live that jumps up to 15v when revved, while I could just replace it I'd rather upgrade as I'm likely to do quite a bit of town driving in future.
I'm waiting for a cal back from prill (who have always been great with help)about the alternator they do that looks like a dynamo.
Any other recommendations would be great as I'm planning to replace in a weeks time

I have fitted a Powerlite alternator conversion, looks stock
only down side is you need to mill out your dynamo stand by 5mm. Defy would recommend it.

This was the first I looked at but I'm hoping to fit it all the same day rather strip then send to be modified then reassemble another day. Finding free time is the hardest part.Splitty64 wrote:I have fitted a Powerlite alternator conversion, looks stockonly down side is you need to mill out your dynamo stand by 5mm. Send your dyno and regulator to Rob at Broadway Electronics in Grays. I've had mine rebuilt by him and never had any issue. No need to mill anything and cheaper than the alternator.Dub Thing wrote:It seems that every time I get back on the road somthing else comes along to hinder 912 ownership.

Generally they don't charge below 8/900 rpm. Since these are often cars that are run infrequently it help if you keep the battery fully charged and on a tickle charger. There are some solar ones that work pretty well for under £20

I think they may offer an up front / advanced exchange pedestal.Dub Thing wrote:This was the first I looked at but I'm hoping to fit it all the same day rather strip then send to be modified then reassemble another day. As for dynamo's yes they work fine, but long late night wet journeys, give me an alternator any day, especial when sat at traffic lights, indicators slowing down etc.. Also small positive is higher system voltage at low revs equals better / cleaner spark at low revs, every volt counts

Re: Alternator Conversion
I went for it and purchased the Prill alternator with a modified stand. A big concideration was that it needed to be a start and finish the same day job as I couldn't send the dynamo and reg away then who knows when I'd find the time to refit it.
I chose Prill firstly because of the excellent help given when I couldn't find the small oil pipe inside the engine case. Good service gets my custom. The fact that it was available off the shelf with the pedestal modified and looks almost original.
13.5 volts at idle even with lights on is just what's needed when stuck in tragic
Well done Prill
