Recommended fuel (and additive)

Gents. I'm a new member and have a very simple (dumb) question. What fuel is best for a 1968 912? And do I need any additive (Lead replacement)? Tried Googling but got nowhere.

Unleaded is fine I generally try to use she'll rather than supermarket stuff. No additives are required

I try to use Shell too and often put in the higher octane stuff. I find the mix is more consistent in my area but I'm happy to use Sainsbury or Tesco but not Asda. I'm not sure the higher octane stuff makes a massive difference but it dependents on how high your compression ratio is and how much you want to advance the timing?

What you need to buy is fuel with low ethanol content... generally the high octane stuff is lower in this ... shell v-power used to be 0% ethanol but these days I thinks it's 5%

Ethanol is no good for the older rubber seals, hoses etc in our cars fuel systems, although a lot will have had the ethanol resistant fuel hoses fitted by now

This is from the Esso web site:

"The majority of unleaded 95 Octane petrol sold in the UK contains up to 5% ethanol as required under the Government’s Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation (RTFO).

There is currently no requirement for renewable fuel (such as ethanol) to be present in super unleaded (97 grade petrol).

Esso super unleaded petrol (Synergy Supreme+ Unleaded 97) is ethanol free (except in Devon, Cornwall, the Teesside area and Scotland). We would therefore advise anyone who has concerns about the presence of ethanol in petrol to use Synergy Supreme+ – providing they do not fill up in Devon or Cornwall, the Teesside area or Scotland."

Apparently Shell Unleaded now contains up to 10% ethanol (see link below which also includes details of vehicles which can use ethanol).
