Quick ratio steering rack?

I'm replacing my steering rack and while I'm in there am contemplating putting a quicker ratio one in there. Quaife do a 2.5 turn to turn one (standard is 3.0, and in a 993 it's 2.47). However I've only seen these as bare rack and pinion kits. Whilst I love a bit of DIY does anyone know of someone who sells them as a replacement steering rack all built up? I seem to remember seeing adverts for one in the one of the Porsche mags - that guy that did rally-based stuff for 911s

No it was another outfit in Lincolnshire I think that advertised stone guards, roll cages and other rally based stuff. Full page advert with a lot of red in it IIRC

Tuthills do what they call a safari rally spec one but no details on what that means - so I'm presuming beefed up and strengthened - don't really need that

Mark I have the Quaif one in race car and I works great. Mike B fitted it for me a few years ago. Don't think it was that difficult to fit but he could advise you.

Assuming this is for the blue car, I'd be careful.

For a rally car, yes, because you're always on the lockstops and the loose surface means the steering won't be too heavy, but on the road the 3.2 steering is direct and heavy enough with the standard rack.

I'd want to test drive one first.

I take your point on the heaviness and done a bit of reading around. Only found two people who've fitted them and they said it was OK - marginally heavier

Also if it turns out to be a problem I can always go back to stock

Mark get another rack and build it into that so you have both std and quick. Not overlay expensive but easier option to change out?

Mark, Chris Tarling on IB rebuilt his steering rack some years ago. Although he used standard internals the process looked pretty simple and I wouldn't have thought be any different to converting your rack with the quick ratio parts. Surely a man of your broad and far reaching skills would manage this?!

Re-building racks isn't too bad but some of the parts are not available.

Bearings are easy to source, the support pad that sits behind the rack is steel on steel in late racks and commonly shows some wear.

We have made the support pads with a Delrin facing which is the same as the earlier pre-1969 racks.

The support bushes at the end of the rack are unavailable and many of the re-builders use Nylatron as a replacement for the original bi-metallic bush but they are usually in reasonable condition. I wouldn't like to use Nylatron as I don't think it is strong enough.

The retaining rings that holds these bushes are best replaced as they can deform when removed and to maintain the 'feel' of the rack it is best to use the correct grade of Liqui-Moly (LM47-L) Lubricant as too stiff a grease will make the rack feel 'sticky'.
