Interior sound deadening

My '66 car requires new carpets but currently has no sound deadening. What difference will sound deadening make? Mine is a standard car, so I think noise reduction would be useful. Which material would be recommended and how best is it installed? Thanks.

Used Dynamat on mine, followed by felt.
Didn't do floor pans.

Thanks guys, that is most useful. Unfortunately Danny I don't expect I'll be at Stanford Hall with the car - she is currently having some bodywork sorted before being resprayed. It's a hospital job with a friend of mine so I can't be sure when the work might complete! It gives me time to work out how to finish the interior..............

i tend to use stuff from Noisekiller: Barrier Mat (similar to Dynamat), Sound Barrier (foam sandwich) and Lead sandwich for engine bay....i steer clear of felt, just in case water gets in

I had assumed you could use a sound deadening material and then carpet directly on top - I wasn't expecting to use felt. Why the use of felt as well? Is it used to provide some padding?

dynamat and similar is for damping out vibrations and might block low frequency sound....you need something to block the higher frequencies....acoustic foam will do this, felt might do perhaps....this is why sound deadening materials are often of the sandwich type, with different types of material bonded together ....look at the Sound Deadening Shop for ideas, & Noisekiller
