dash illumination panel lamps

just refurbing the gauges on my 1969 912....i will install a fuse in the wire to the currently unfused panel lamps and change the original lamp holders (the ones that don't seem to retain the bulbs too well)...i've found some good quality brass holders with a spade connection and with a good positive lamp location, and i'm going all LED, but my question is, can i use an LED for the generator warning lamp as it's supposed to vary in intensity and i'm not sure an LED will do this....and will the direction indicator warning lamps swap out to LED?

Don't think you can as it will illuminate all of the time that the battery voltage is greater than the dynamo output. No dim glow just on or off

There's a fellow in the USA called Jules Dielen who produces LED sets for 6v and 12v 356 instruments. A generator light comes as part of the kit and he has plenty of delighted customers over on the Registry.

The only issue reported concerns the correct fitting of the generator LED, being a diode, polarity is a factor.

Not much help I'm afraid but a LED generator light does seem to be a possibility.

It sounds as though you already have all the LED bits you need but for info I replaced my gauge lights with these:

No generator lamp but he has the indicators available. Plug and play, very easy to install and I can actually read the gauges now.

The only problem with LEDs is that the gauge dimmer on the light switch doesn't have enough range and only dims them slightly, but I've yet to find them too bright, except for the handbrake warning which I changed back to a standard bulb.

Not that I've found, the guy makes them himself. Mine took about two weeks to get to me.

having looked at the Carmagic website (not much info), they look like the lamps that are available from ClassicCarLed here in UK....they do various sorts of BA7S lamps , the one like the Carmagic one they actually state the lumen output and they say its their brightest, but maybe the smaller bulb-type would be sufficient....anyone tried them?

spoke to the bloke at Classic car led today.... the charging circuit on our cars may use the generator lamp resistance to determine whether it charges the battery, so an ordinary LED might cause the battery to not receive a charge, he's not sure...hope you can try it and see
