1977 really a 70.

Post by Sik split »

Hi all,
I need a bit of advice from those in the know.
I've been offered what I've always believed to a RHD 78 3.0 Targa Carrera.
A friend bought it 9 years ago. It's solid enough, had a repaint and a bit of engine work.

I've been to have a look at it today and it turns out it's a 1970 T with an import date of 78.
It has all the impact bumper parts on, including the interior and the 3.0 engine.

The car is sub £20k and useable as is.
It's a bit of a curveball as I thought it was good value for a 78 targa so to find a 70 body was exciting but what sort of money would be involved in returning it all back to a 1970 and is it worth doing.
I could do with your advices and wisdom

Many thanks
Matt

I would say that is a good price for a RHD 70s 911, especially if its solid and no rot.
to back date - depends what parts you use.
design 911 do a backdate kit
http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/pt69_449_ ... tion-Kits/
but then you need someone skilled to fit it all/paint etc
otherwise you are looking at genuine Porsche panels/bonnet/wings/bumpers which will considerably more , but a much better fit.
sourcing original items like indicators/grills etc is doable but might take scouring ebay/here and will not be cheap.
could be a nice long term project though if you had the funds and you could put some decent value onto the car if that is what your aim is.
I suppose the other issue if you want to return to original is sourcing an engine, but to be honest why bother if the 3.0 is a good one
just my 2p worth
In any event I still think you cant go wrong with a price less than 20K

Thanks. I previously had a 73 targa. I share your enthusiasm.
I've just backdated a 76 912e but with mostly glass panels.
This one is a decent car as it sits, so the option is there to leave it alone.
Seems a shame though that an early car is sitting with all those late parts on it.

I'll have it if you don't want it. :) Srsly.

As above, really. As the og engine is missing it's not going to be cost effective to make it a stock car again so I'd be tempted to keep the big arches, swap the font slam panel for an early one, bolt on some grp bumpers, and bonnet, extend the front wings down a bit and run it as a bit of a hot rod.

You'd probably be looking at £5k by the time you've sold the IB bits.

The chassis number says 70 targa. I checked the treasure chest and it's def RHD. There's no sign of it being changed either.

You are correct - if it's originally a Targa , then it can't be an original RHD (assuming 1970 model is correct)
Royal Enfield .. still in India
GL 1800 Tour DCT, for pleasure / Fantic 240 Professional - play
Rally 911 (1966) build parked for a while
Rally 928 (work started again - inc serious weight loss programe !)
.... and now another VW Up GTI owner.

I'll have to have another look. I couldn't see any sign of it being changed but the chassis number definitely makes it a 70 targa.

If it looks like an IB car inside and out, has an SC engine [and gearbox?] and looks to be an original RHD car, I fear it's much more likely that the VIN is the thing that's been changed rather than everything else...

Got any pics?

I suppose that's possible. The front clip has been changed though.
The car was brought in the country 78. At some point it suffered a rear end shunt. I think it was perhaps updated at that point. I think it might be wise to check under the dash again.

Not all the update parts are the same colour so it's not all a single car that's been changed. The dash looked early. I suppose the dials are the most likely to be able to date the core.

They are date stamped and easy to remove, but also likely to have been replaced as part of the IB update?

Secret / build number stamped into the dash next to the ashtray, under the knee padding, could be useful here.

That's basically the point I got to!!
Shows the value of these communities for sure. Worse thing is I have to now explain to my mate why it isn't all that. I guess if it could be bought for the sum of its parts it would be worth it as an outlaw but I'm not sure I want to be that deep into something that needs a detailed explanation of itself when it comes to sell it!
Thanks for all the input.
