Mmmmmmm

Correct pump tag for a US 2.4T mfi engine but fitted by the factory to an engine in October 1971.

I've seen pumps fitted to engines with a date a few months ahead of the build date of the chassis but never a year ahead. It's possible I suppose but I would be thinking that's a replacement pump at some time. It could be that the internal space cam has been reworked in this pump to match an E engine upgrade or just changed for failure of the original pump (rare). Or,

Quite often US spec mfi cars were swopped out for carburetors back in earlier times because there was an opinion mfi was just too hard to set up. It could be this happened to your engine and subsequently someone has reinstated the mfi with as near to the correct system as possible, hence the date discrepancy on the pump. They might have only been able to find a green mfi shroud as the original yellow was swopped for a carbed version and lost or sold along with the original mfi.

Regards
Mike

Thanks
Late 72 US T looks right to have mfi. Maybe I am missing something?

Hi All,
I'm on the way with the strip down.

Front bumper and one wing off. Inner wing looking in great shape. A pillar not as bad as I was expecting. Front panel very nice.

Hi Mike, why are you suggesting Oct 71? CoA says build Oct 72. Does that tag contain info on pump manufacture?

must be some A post rot with the screen base holed like that?
Front looks really good from that pic esp if the corners are as sound.

Distributor is a 2.4. So looks like someone has been playing with the engine at some point. (You might find some nice bits in it) 8)

I'm thinking about using Lee at Octane Garage Crowborough to strip the engine down and see whats what. Garry Hall tipped me off about Lee and I see good things on here about him.

Garry recommended Lee to me as well. I had him rebuild my steering rack and gearbox. Top chap, extremely knowledgeable, knows porsches well - used to work at Paragon Porsche in 5 Ashes. Would absolutely recommend him for expertise and he is a nice guy as well. I have probably wasted rather too much of his time asking inane questions which he is always happy to answer!

Got the other front wing off, inner wing good. Screen pillar better than the other side. Getting ready to get the fuel tank and engine out this weekend.

It is normal for the CoA to use a different code system than the badge on the car in that time period. On the CoA the 80 stands for silver metallic; the 8080 means silver body & silver roof, twere it a Targa it would have been 8010 for silver body & black roof. This code form was used on the badges in 1970 & 1971, but for some reason was carried on in the records for later years. The xxx-y-z form on the badge is far more accurate since it has the colour number (eg 936) the paint shop code (9, while 8 also exists) and the paint supplier code. The colour number was in use back in the 50's and is still used today, however until 1972 they usually used a colour code to represent the colour number, and those codes were usually used for just two years. In short, both the badge and CoA are correct, but the CoA needs interpretation.
