Fuel gauge erratic - clicks, reading jumps rapidly

Post by yoda »

Hello

Just drove my '73 911 down to Wales and the fuel gauge has had a melt down. First it started jumping up and down the gauge rapidly, while making an annoying clicking noise, and the readings were all over the place. Now I am home, the gauge is reading off the bottom of the scale and seems to be lost there.

Would ideally like to get the gauge working again as will be doing about 1000 miles this weekend and would prefer not to run out of petrol. Won't be able to take it into a specialist to have a look until after the trip.

Second best option would be if I could disable it so it stops making the annoying noise. Have some basic tools with me but not much.

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Feroz

Funnily enough my 356 has been doing the same and I had the same trouble with a TR3A I had. On that it was the ground connection on the petrol tank sender.

Mine went mental , jumping up and down with the indicators etc ... It was the ground behind the dash on top of the bulkhead that had failed

Fuel sender possibly or its connector. Pull the black plug off the sender on top of the tank, clean contact pins and refit.

356`s always react this way but we can supply you with a damper unit - not expensive - easy to fit

I'm not referring to the reaction to the float leaping about, but the flicking violently from end to end, which is rather more alarming.
