something that matches the style of the rest of the 993 dash and most modern units are all flashing lights and garish displays. An amber backlight is also desirable to integrate with the 993 instruments.

So, here’s what I’ve settled on. It’s the perfect design for a classic Porsche and - being cheap - ideal for me.

It’s a Continental radio and whilst they do also offer a CD version and a DAB version this is the base model. But even that has FM/AM radio, RDS tuner, MP3 and Bluetooth. It also has a USB port for flash drives so you can listen to music files that way too.
It’s a little thing, short in depth and lightweight but it’s modern technology and max power is 4 x 41 watts.
They’re not commonplace in the UK but I sourced mine, brand new, on eBay Germany for just £76! Less than £90 including shipping. Bargain.

The phone connectivity will hopefully work and - if so - will be a welcome bonus. I’ve run the microphone up inside the windscreen pillar whilst I was retrimming and fitting the headliner. It’s a very neat install.
The radio was a perfect & easy fit and the wiring not too complex.
I’ve yet to try it but I’ll report more once I get using it.

....Not to jump ahead but as you mentioned the door speakers, have you decided on a head unit yet?...

I chose to include some extra soundproofing as I went along.
I've covered the rear shelf, rear seat back and inner rear arches.
The car retains all the standard soundproofing but a modern sound damper will likely be more efficient and the only downside is a few kilos more weight.

I’m not big on sounds in the car. Not too fussed about audio. But I thought I ought to have something in the car to play music.
The problem is you want something that matches the style of the rest of the 993 dash and most modern units are all flashing lights and garish displays. An amber backlight is also desirable to integrate with the 993 instruments.
There’s a few that are suitable, one sought after unit is the Becker Grand Prix. It’s an appropriate brand and a good spec. But there are many colour options (some have red or yellow or green displays) and to find one illuminating amber is difficult and expensive. Probably £500? Certainly pricey for an old radio.

Sounds like I'm too late but I have a Becker CR21 for sale that would be very period correct for your car
