How are you compiling instructions to put it all back together? And are you following instructions for the disassembly? Very interesting read.

removing the existing carpet (without damaging the soundproofing)

Right, to remove the carpets you’re going to need a serious solvent. So, skip all the so called ‘carpet glue removers’, I’ll tell you what you want. It’s called Xylene.
You can get it from Porton Down Secret Weapons Facility or the Atomic Research Establishment or the top secret UK National Hazardous Chemicals Storage Centre. Or - as in my case - off eBay.

Now, this stuff is powerful, it does melt glue. And that’s what you want. What you don’t want is the fumes, the smell, the toxicity and the skin irritation.
It can also react with certain plastics and I had two tools for removing interior trim but they are now both welded into one…
Hence, my Poundland reading glasses (didn’t want to melt my expensive frames) and the respirator. It’s not a pretty sight but it’s just me urging you to be careful, keep the area well ventilated and wear gloves. I did wear gloves but they kept melting…
Oh and, don’t worry, I understand exposure to low concentrations doesn’t cause permanent damage, my cognitive function should return soon….

By the way Xylene comes in a plastic bottle. So, it doesn't melt everything.
But this really was the most awful job I undertook with the restoration, time consuming and unrewarding.
And I had to do it once to remove the carpets from the car and pretty much all over again as the black set taken from a 993 had most of the ripped soundproofing still affixed (legacy of a careless removal).
The rear seat bases were even more impossible. I can't explain how tough that particular adhesive is, you'll know when you get to it...

But - eventually - I got the old carpet out and retained the shaped soundproofing.
It looks sticky in this shot and it was. Frankly you could lay new carpets over this and you'd be done.

So, I roughly taped backing paper over the soundproofing, to keep things clean and stop everything sticking to it.

I tried a similar face mask on the other night

But this really was the most awful job I undertook with the restoration, time consuming and unrewarding.

Maybe removing the mask for a few minutes might have helped relieve these moments somewhat.

Now, I will confess I didn't feel comfortable removing the engine & gearbox.
I don't have the ramps and the idea of 3.6 litres of power plant squishing my head was worrying.
So, I asked Nick (Moss) to remove it and we could then ship it to Nick (Fulljames) for the rebuild.
