I thought that too. But, this week...
I'm blaming eBay. And Tom, obviously.
Cheers, Richard.
Nice teasing shot. How does it drive now that you have it? Are you close enough to Bristol to visit Alfaholics? Well worth speaking to Andrew (or Max), probably some of the most helpful car people I have ever dealt with, respond immediately to queries (when they are not racing) and provide good advice and lots of options.
Hi Andy,
Yes, that's the one. Looks quite dodgy in the ad, and it's far worse than that in the flesh! But I got to see it before buying - the vendor has a hobby business importing from S Africa and lives near me.
Tom - paint and detailing done by Stevie Wonder's less detail-oriented cousin. Sound familiar? But the things I found interesting about it were
1) Step front matching numbers
2) 1965, so FIA papers an option if I want to go that way
3) really solid underneath, seemingly never welded, no bumps I can see
4) the hideous "restoration" has the benefit of being lazy. So plenty of original bits survive. For example the seats have been re-covered in the cheapest vinyl imaginable, but the original frames are underneath. Similarly the (Dunlop) brakes have received a questionable coat of caliper paint, but are original. Etc
5) Drives respectably. Engine willing, gearbox rather nice, brakes not bad. Suspension needs new bushes and proper setup.
Plan is:
- get MoT and register. From testing so far, the Mot fail issues are mostly electrical. It has a S African roadworthiness certificate, but it seems they don't care whether the lights or indicators work.
- drive around in it for a bit
- sort out suspension (alfaholics)
- decide what to do next. Will need repainting at some point, but I might tidy up details and keep pottering around before going the whole hog. I will definitely sort out the interior. GTA a-like? Tempting!
Hi Ian, well spotted. 1965 step front 1600 GT. Black interior at the moment. I await the re-opening of the Alfa archive (nice quick email back, but still being re-organised apparently) to find out what it was originally.
Sorry for thread hijack. Will start my own. This is an Alfa forum, right?
