I'm afraid it's time to sell my SWB 911. This is an original UK car, RHD, complete matching numbers and in the correct and original colour, complete with a Porsche UK Certificate of Authenticity. It's a 1968 model, with the 5-speed dogleg gearbox. It had a full engine rebuild around 3 years ago and now has 3795 miles on this rebuilt engine, so it's nicely run in and I've been enjoying it hugely! This was meant to be for keeps alongside the 356A, but it isn't going to work out that way.
This car came to me as a recommendation from a friend with a great collection of cars, but as he already has 3 other 911s so passed over to me! I bought the car from a lovely gentleman who, as he had reached 80 years old told me "he needed to grow up"! He's had countless 911s over the years (including a 2.7 RS back in the day), has some family connections to Josh Sadler and really knows his Porsches, and it was this gentleman who commissioned all the work. The only changes from original spec are the stainless steel exhaust and the two front seats which are from an S model of the same year. Since I acquired the car in Oct 2014 I have used it mainly for the usual classic car events - Goodwood, Silverstone (where we were given parking out front at the Porsche Experience Centre for the first round of the 2015 WEC championship) and this year for Le Mans. I also use it for the odd local trip and school run, which the kids love almost as much as me
Before leaving for Le Mans this year the car had a service/ oil change and MOT (expires late June 2017). The only work needed for the MOT was handbrake adjustment and a fix to the indicators. The bodywork is exceptional. The car was exported to America when it was about 6 years old, which no doubt saved it from an otherwise rusty ending! The chap I bought it from is the one who takes credit for bringing this car back from the US and (as well as the engine/ mechanical rebuild) he also sourced new factory rear wings as that was the only area showing rust - at the same time the car was repainted in its original colour. There is no rust or rot on this car anywhere, and it is always kept in my locked/ alarmed garage when not in use. If I was keeping the car I'd be looking at new carpets and a general tidy up of the interior, but this is the easy stuff.
It really is a gem, and I'm pretty miffed at having to sell it, but this or the 356A has to go really as we still have some big build work going on at home and I need it finished. I doubt I'll find another SWB like this, and if I do I doubt I'll be able to afford it in 3 years time at the current rate of things. But it'll be even harder to find a 356A so that is the one I'm keeping...
So all the bodywork is done, the engine/ mechanical side is done and you can drive it for miles in comfort thanks to the S seats. It has never let me down and it was a fantastic drive to Le Mans, zipping through country roads on the way there, and sitting at a very happy 65 - 75mph all the way back on the motorways. Like any good 911 it did not overheat when we hit monster traffic jams on the way in to Le Mans, with the needle barely creeping up the white band on the gauge. Driving it is a joy, it sounds superb, the steering is perfect 911 and it flows over bumps better than many newer cars - people are nice to you and you'll often get someone chatting to you when you fill up at the petrol station! It's a real pleasure to own this car and I'll be very sorry to part with it; prices seem to be going ever higher hence why I was never going to sell it, but needs must unfortunately.
I'll be happy to send additional photos and answer specific questions people may have. Here are some pics for now...
I've been looking at what else is available but it is quite hard to price a RHD matching numbers SWB 911 as there are so few. I've seen a couple of silly prices, but they hang around and I'm not in to that - if it's selling I'd rather get it done so I can move on with the build, and any spare I will put into the 356A so at least I'll still have that to enjoy
