Engine numbers

I've not got an engine number in the usual place on the case, just a blank space with made in Germany underneath where the number is usually stamped. The only marks I can see is a small "k" on a web behind the distributor. I've assumed this was an early Porsche replacement engine under warranty as most other parts look to be original plus original gearbox. Any advice on how to id the engine ?

A factory replacement engine would have a regular serial # with a "KD" prefix. A replacement 3 piece block would have no numbers anywhere except for the mating #'s; the engine would have been built by a dealer or other engine rebuilder. If only the front (third) piece is a replacement, then it is possible that the case has a production # and type # on adjacent bosses just in front of the fan shroud. Let me know what you can find.

Thanks Dave, Had a good look around the top and bottom of the engine today - no numbers at all except the small "k" - a couple of pics
