So, onward with the strip down...
The mirrors had to come off and be taken apart.

Delete the electric mirrors, you adjust them once and never need to move them again. Much prefer the manual set up in the RS, the mirrors in my old turbo would play up at time, bump the switch by accident move the mirror and then it wouldn't work. Frustrating to say the least!

The Porsche engineer we heard from earlier (the guy designing undertrays) had a girlfriend who worked in the exhaust department.
He relayed his concerns about job prospects because the 911 had progressed as far as it could be developed. “You must think of new advances” he cautioned. But, she observed “the exhaust we designed for the ’73/74 cars was perfect. It sounded great, it performed superbly and no aftermarket systems could better the simplicity and effectiveness of the standard offering” Her boyfriend conceded all that but urged her to think of something, anything to keep her in gainful employment. So, she had a restless night and then it came to her, she woke suddenly, sat upright and thought: heat shields!
And for the next twenty years she designed heat shields.

These are heat shields from my 993. And I’ve missed some from this shot. I don’t believe I gathered them all up from my garage.
It’s all lightweight aluminium & steel but it is weight in the wrong place. You’re well shielded from exhaust heat in a 993….

As it came off the car I'd clean it up. All the pieces were in pretty good condition.
Some of that was simply because quite a few of the components had been replaced recently by the previous owner.

It was quite fulfilling to get them looking better. No one is ever going to see them but I'll know...

I also set about cleaning the under trays and wheel arch liners.

Not to jump ahead but as you mentioned the door speakers, have you decided on a head unit yet? Also talking of heat shields, what's your thinking on the exhaust/cat combination?

talking of heat shields, what's your thinking on the exhaust/cat combination?

The previous owner had only recently fitted new exhausts (in 2015) so I'm sorted. He'd spent £2,800 on new heat exchangers, new exhausts & tips, new heat shields, etc. The exhausts are Dansk units. They sound good, I'd say just a little louder/boomy than standard. But not much.

This is a small thing but it was bugging me. The rear spoiler (the section that elevates) is made of plastic. It has a tendency to warp or ‘bow’ after a few years. The centre doesn’t sit flat within the steel frame.
It’s only a millimetre or two but it looks poor. It certainly annoyed me.
Well, it annoyed a few owners and thence annoyed Porsche too. So they developed a simple fix. You can buy a shaped metal bar that locates within a channel in the spoiler. You bond that in place, it holds the shape, eh voila!, all perfect. And here it is being installed. Works a treat and the gaps are perfect now.

The rear badging was tough to remove. Someone had really wanted that stuck on. They must have used superglue or something similar. Anyway, as part of my quest to clean up the lines of the 993, I will be deleting the badge.
If following drivers don’t know what the car is they can stop me and ask….

I sometimes whinge about the modern incarnation of Porsche. Parts price gouging, making hideous SUVs, sub-standard hot drink stirrers in the waiting area, etc.
But the above demonstrates one of the many things which is still great about Porsche. Love it.
