What fuel pump 911 T 2,2. My 1970

Post by Max911 »

Hi everybody
Slowly going on with reassemblying...

BIG DOUBT

My car when I bought it had a fuel pump hardi with 2 lines (in and out)

From fuel tank: big exit, old fuel pipe closed with a bolt  , small exit going into fuel pump and from fuel pump then into metal fuel pipe in car tunnel and zenith carburettor

Fuel pump not working, I substituted it with generic in line from APA with same (wrong connection?) but the car ran well...

Now, looking for originality: WHY HAS NEW PUMP FROM ROSEpassion.com or others 3 lines? In, out and whatelse? (And it cost 650€...)

http://www.rosepassion.com/it/cat/porsc ... nte/P17997

From PET catalogue It's not clear how to connect these three lines...I think there's something mismatching with fuel vapour system line from luggage compartment to engine bay and air filter ( that I will install although only for external originality)

Page 147 on porsche PET catalogue (sorry not able to attach here...)

Do I really need an expensive three line fuel pump?
Apart from originality issue... I mean...

How the three lines are connected?

Why fuel tank has two fuel exit?

Thanks a lot as usual

I think you need a three line pump for your application. I believe one is IN (to the pump) one is RETURN to the tank (which is short if your pump is at the front next to the tank but I thought 2.2T pumps were fitted at the rear next to the torsion bar?) and the third is FEED through the tunnel to the carbs. If your pump should be mounted at the rear then the return would also go through the centre tunnel back to the tank. I believe the pump number for your application is BOSCH p/n 0 580 960 009. Does your tank fittings look like this,

Edit. The pump was fitted at the rear MY 71> so your front location is correct for MY 70
Looks like your previous owner may have simply blocked out the return fitting on the tank.

Thanks a lot Mike! I finally understand

My tank looks like that in your picture...but what is in and out? Smallest in the centre or large by side?

My car is a my 70, I confirm fuel pump just behind front axle

Why two lines going into pump? To have the possibility to empty it better?

Max

The return to the tank is to keep the pump running as cool as possible in hot climates assisting
longevity of operation. I'm sure an non original pump with the return blocked off will work fine too. Depends on how original you want to be.

To answer Dougies question,

That is a MFI pump (edit , see Andy already answered)
Operates at approx 14 psi whereas Max's carb pump 009 works at a much lower pressure (4.3 psi) even though the pumps look visually similar. The cooling effect is maintained by insulating the pipes in the tunnel I think (not investigated this yet) and max should have those insulating cooling blocks between the heads and the carbs which most engines are missing.

Dougie, I'll buy your pump. Pm on the way later.

Regards
Mike

Thanks again Mike

Not so clear for me if the return pump is the narrow central tank line or side large but looking to originality I will search for correct three line pump.

No connecting between heads and carbs in my car

In tunnel only fuel line to bring fuel to carbs and two very large (13mm) pipes for fuel vapour to connect front to carbon vapour filter and back to air filter housing (USA car system)

By the way clearer picture for me now thanks to ddk culture sharing!

The one next to the pressure relief valve is the return the large one is the suction the other is the feed. (I think, from memory).

Dear all,

Going on with restoration and ...troulbles....

Following your instructions and documents I bought the "bosch" type pump 901.608.107.00 "three exit"

Mounted, connected and turned the key to try a first start but...

Fuel pressure seems to be too high... Fuel exiting between carburettor and intakes... And around pump accelerator diaphgram
See attached picture
Image

Before try again I want to be sure that pump is operating correctly...

Any suggestion and check are as usual welcome
Thanks
Max
