Starter motor removal advice

Hi, quick question, should the bolts holding the starter motor be Allen bolts or standard bolts / nuts - I seem to have one of each on mine. Any advice on best place to get a new starter, mine packed up today. Any advice on bast way to get to the top bolt?

I can't remember what is the correct head type, I have a feeling mine are hex head but it's been quite a few years since I last had mine off.

Removal can be achieved by lying underneath the car and reaching the bolts, not the easiest job but they can be reached, ramps/axle stands are needed to be able to get yourself fully underneath the car.

When it comes to replacement I would definitely recommend replacing the stock unit with a hi torque version. 912 engines are high compression and benefit well from the extra oomph, my old stock starter always seemed really lazy but the high torque version I have now never does. Andy Prill or karmann konnection will be able to supply you with one.

You have a beautiful 912 by the way, just taken a look at your old purchase thread. Same colour as mine but a year earlier, in fact I think I just missed out on purchasing your car about 10 years ago when it was up for sale through revival cars (think it's the same one, I'm sure the Reg began srr)

Thanks timo, car may of been at revival, - it was around the London area for a while, then went to Scotland, came back and was laid up for about 6 years, that was three years ago. Will take a look at the hi torque starter. Originally a Nevada car until 1989

My understanding is that the starter motors are a pig to get back in. I think that Roy (he has a 356 and is on DDK) created a thread on abcgt.com about how he did it. I think a special spanner (which isn't expensive), and lots of patience, seemed to be needed.

Hi,

Loosed the 10mm allen bolt now at the top of the starter but won't come out - turns freely with resistance.

questions - could there be a nut on the other end ?
do you have to loosen / pull the starter backwards to apply pressure to the bolt as you turn ?
any other advice / views - starting to cheese me off now.

I always take mine to Motechs in Romford.They Just rebuilt a 911 starter for me, about £170.Not seen your car around town yet, have to keep my eyes open

I've used the Hi Torque starter on my 2.4S. Worked well. Came from Cambridge Motorsports I think, they had a stand at the Irish Classic Car Show.

yes there is a nut on the other end of that bolt.


if you reach down in the engine bay over the top of the fan shroud and then down on the right hand side (as you look at engine) you should be able to find the nut.

removing the starter is pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

I usually use a pair of mole grips to grip onto the nut and the weight of them should be enough to stop it spinning whilst backing out the allen headed bolt.

this is the starter motor I fitted to mine - from a vw beetle automatic - had the same part numbers on it as the original one i removed

thanks for the replies, removed now and one on order from Motex, Nearly £90 cheaper than ordering through Porsche specialist for a rebuilt OEM starter.
