Always good to look at alternatives, mostly not sure about welding very thin stainless to a much thicker mild steel filler. Measured everything yesterday and looks like will need to cut the 6" bauer connector down by half in the height.
Also need to think of a drain hole, not that I will ever spill any fuel into!

Rich - also been looking at the flexi-ducting solution in detail. Connection to the tank should be easy, but would include the fuel sender within the flexi-duct area, not sure if this is an issue? At the bonnet may prove a little more crude, maybe something like a plywood ring which is glued/ d/tape and/or screwed in place. Then secure flexi to it somehow, easier when I get hold of some. I thought 8" diameter would give plenty of space around the spill try.

Rich, I was looking at the bit about fuel system being secure and probably seeing things in the worst case and that if there is a way to interpret things negatively then try and avoid it. I really like the look of the leather straps and have logged it away until we are on the other side of the IVA.

Great, thanks for the dimensions; I'll be watching how you tackle the fuel drip tray etc as I will be looking to 'borrow' ideas.

Will be posting a good update in the next couple of days as I've been busy in The Cave.

Morning Rich,

Just got back from a couple of weeks lying on the beach in the Caribbean. So no work but loads more ideas and enthusiasm. The car is still at my friends garage which is not bad given they have moved location with it! I know I am looking at some evenings next week to finish the last electrical work. We are also in week 4 of a 10 week extension on the house. Will end up with a triple garage. I have even managed to include a shallow pit for the scissor jack so that it sits level with the floor.
I guess work on the car is a little delayed but will start to speed ahead in August/ September.

Morning, Well not a hugh amount of updates so far this summer. I spent Thursday evening with two experts helping on the wiring. Most of the time I felt like a spare one! Lights, gauges all connected and working. I had forgotten to order a voltage regulator, but should be here early next week for round two. The wires running out of the reversing/ licence plate light may need some protection from the heat of the exhaust.

I can't decide whether to fit the windscreen before the IVA test. I have the heated screen so demisting sorted and I have a wiper motor, not fitted but ready to wire in (Tuesday night) and I can find a washer bottle so I guess makes sense just to do it.

Does anyone know if the rear view mirror is suitable for the IVA test? ie you can see a wide enough rear view/ angle. Assume it will need the obligatory rubber protection. I was planning to fit some big plastic wing mirrors to give good rear vision.

Hi Greg

I'd fit the screen, bit more pleasant to drive.

The centre mirror will be fine as long as it's covered with rubber round the frame. See my thread. I only fitted a driver door mirror. Didn't bother with the passenger side door mirror and passed. Think IVA stipulates minimum of 2 mirrors but check as it may have changed. A few less unnecessary holes to fill the better.

If you do fit the windscreen make sure the wipers park to the right as your sat in the car.

Car look great siting in the sunlight. How is the new hot engine progressing?

So last night I decided I should spend some time on the wiring, the task wire the VW wiper motor. Easy, no! did not help not having any diagrams and the column stalk being off the Porsche with 2 speed, intermittent and wash. Found the circuit for the 2 speed and the wash but got confused by the park option on the VW motor. It appears to need a separate earth and live and I guess activates when you switch off the stalk.
Anyone got any experience of this?

From memory I have 53a as 2 speed, 53 as single speed, 31b? and 53a as park

On the wiring l couldnt say without pulling my switch and checking the wiring Greg. Are you using a Vw or Porsche wiper motor?

Hello,

Really enjoyable day working on the car. Fitted 35 mm spacer at the front which stopped the inner arch clash and filled the outer arch nicely. Tidied several cables and added an earth to the fuel tank, started on the wire positions for the wipers. The brake light switch at the pedal now works a treat after rebuilding the switch and location. Best bit was fitting the new air filters;



New home for the moment. Filth dirty so will need to get the grime off it next week.



Rich - using a VW beetle 2 speed wiper motor, got it free so seemed a good place to start.

Got mine all wired in using an original 356 switch. Found that it has 2 speeds and and intermittent of sorts.

I'll look out my wiring diagram for you Greg.

Re the wiper parking, I though they had to be the other way around Rich so that they sweep closer to the offside windscreen edge? Only reason I ask is looking at RHD cars they all appear to park with the he blades pointing to the near side and sweep up and over to the off-side. If not, I've got mine set wrong and will need to look at changing things slightly so that the motor works the other way. Hoping that is simply a case of swapping a few cables around rather then needing to buy a new motor!!
