Thanks all, Whilst (most of) you lot are off enjoying the French sunshine I decided to add the cost up...



You could consider the oil tank and posh heat exchangers as luxuries and the oil pipe and rocker shafts as bad luck, so let's call it £3000 between friends.

Not too bad I guess, don't think could do it cheaper and still be a credible rebuild.

MOT in the morning. I'll take the long way there to try and get more than 5 miles on it!

£3K is good going.
Did you add your hours up and then work out the amount you saved for the DIY effort?

God knows how many hours!

I guess not doing barrels, pistons cams etc probably halved the parts bill against many rebuilds.

So just to close this thread off the car has done a whole 25 miles, now has a shiny new MOT and a little leak from the crank seal (gearbox end).

Probably going to run it in around Wales on Saturday and loosen it up!

well done Gary, remember any noises you may hear over the next 1000 miles will be amplified! So take them with a pinch of salt!

BTW I was told to run the engine in hard!!!

...and most of the BIW sheet metal and a thousand hours of Barry's time...

Spending this much time underneath the car recently reminds me how much work there is still to do, if I really want to. It's solid where it needs to be, but none of it is pretty!

Just read on another thread here a 'reference' stock, rust free, 61K mile, 2 owner T on original paint for £62K + fees.
With service history!

Why bother restoring when such a car is available at that price with those qualities?

I never bothered running-in my 3.2 as I couldn't being a track car.
Seems perfectly ok 3 years in.

Lots of oil changes in the early miles pays dividends.

Good luck with your build, I'm 500 miles in now having done the first service at about 250.

All is sweet, and much quieter now I've nailed a couple of valve clearances that were a little slack!

Off to Spa in a couple of weeks for a 1000mile round trip. Can't wait!
