I was planning to take the '12 to work today but due to some enthusiastic play driving by my 2 year old the window mech has taken a hit - I found the window half down and when attempting to raise it the glass dropped into the door...
The Gods obviously had a hand in this too as the car staying put was a good thing due to the flash floods that hit us mid afternoon
Does anyone have any tips or pointers as to a common failure that causes this? I was planning on taking the door card off tomorrow and poking about but if there is a known weakness it'd be handy to know before I start.

The glass has probably pulled out of the U channel along the bottom edge, rather than the sliders coming out of the channel. Once out, the glass can just slide past the rest of the mechanism.
Mine used to do this trick on the way down if the glass was stiff in the side channels, the pull on the mechanism was enough to pull the channel off the glass (mine are elec, but principle of mechanism is exactly the same).I don't know if originally it was just a push fit with the rubber, but I ended up helping with some adhesive last time I put mine back together. I think the channel should be in a central position along bottom edge of glass, but there will be dirty marks showing where it was.
You will probably need to remove glass and channel from door to fix them back together, doing in situ I would think v diff. So remove internal door capping and external scraper as well. A bit of trial and error is needed to get mechanism at right height to be able to engage sliders in enlarged holes in channel.

In the end my time opportunity was spent rebuilding my 996 rear end so the 912 will be looked at next weekend. I think the mech was stiff so hopefully a quick fix by relocating the glass in the runner.
