My new ride....

Post by murph2309 »

Well, some of you know that I've recently bought a new car. In fact I've had a lot of help and advice behind the scenes as well as a very much appreciated visit and inspection from Darren to confirm the car actually existed.

It started as a search for my next project - this time I fancied a coupe. I was looking for something to hotrod, something that would be as relatively rust free as possible, LHD and not a longhood - I didn't think I could afford one and I'm a bit shy about chopping one up.

Funny how searches take you....Anyway, what finally took my interest was this car. It's a 1978 SC in Minerva Blue. Stateside car (Michigan). What really got me about it though is that it is a one-owner full history (including original bill of sale), looks about as rust-free as they come and has only done 71k miles.

Apparently the paint is about 40% original (the sides have been done), the interior is brilliant - it was optioned with cork interior, leather recaro sports seats, AM/FM auto-reverse cassette stereo. On the outside it came with black alloy wheels (Fuchs), black trim (now nicely faded) Bilstein shocks and Air con.

I haven't actually seen it yet....let alone driven it. It's now at Redtek awaiting a little run over to see what's what, but initial investigations seem to show I've not bought a pup....

Anyway. I can't bring myself to alter this one at all. Apart from maybe lower it and do something with the engine. Oh yes, and to get some H4s for it. Yes, I am going to do that. And maybe put some Euro overriders on....

It's probably the lowest engine spec 911 you can buy :-) Strangled by American emissions regs, I have plans to turn it into a hot C3 type engine, keeping the induction, hotter cam, new exhaust and SSIs, higher compression, changed valve timing back to the C3 spec and make sure the WUR & other bits on the K-jetronic are in top nick. Hoping to get around 220-230 and with a bit of weight saving from getting rid of the AC should be a bit of fun. Everything will be kept and will be returnable to absolute stock.

Hoping that will give a bit of poke without producing a 'fragile' or 'highly strung' engine. I want this one to be a fast cruiser....

So here she is....

So there you go....

It's not coming to CLM - but I will be driving it around the country before and afterwards - hoping to drop in on a few people while I'm over.

Overall I think it's a lovely-looking, honest-but-not-perfect car. I'm looking forward to little improvements here and there as I go, over the next few years.

Now that looks very nice Richard.
Great colour combo and looks like comprehensive documentation. Cases would appear to have definitely been apart at some point.

Mike

What a great looking car, nice one! No spoiler coupe in a splendid colour is a good look and there is lots you can do to sharpen up the drive a bit. Look forward to seeing it in due course.

Take care

Lovely looking car with a great history file. My first SC had a cork interior, fantastic!

And gorgeous it is too......there can't me many SC's out there that are as clean and original as this! 8)

The car looks even better in the flesh and has been very well preserved and looked after. It's had a little paintwork in it's time although this is older and could easily be mistaken for first paint, this must have been purely cosmetic as the paint measures consistantly across the car with absolutey no evidence of any accident damage. I only had a short drive but the engine feels great and whole car seems very sound. A little light commissioning and an MOT is all the car needs.

A fantastic find Richard.......as I said, if you didn't buy it then I would have!

Congrats :)
